    I think that you will find that it is not a fluid coupling.  Rather, the cable turns a magnetic rotor which influences the stator and drags it around against spring pressure resistance.  The faster you go, the further the stator is rotated.  Voila!, a speed indicator – speedometer.

    Surprisingly mine is very accurate, according to a smartphone GPS app. My daily driver car is probably less accurate because it has 17″ wheels instead of the original 16″, making for about 1.5 MPH slower as seen on the speedometer.

    I just didn’t expect much accuracy from this Vintage speedo when I saw it, and the wheel+tire size would have been a factor just like on my other car. Good that I don’t need to think of it being slow or fast at all… unless I change wheels or tires anyway. Sure not going to matter enough though.
