There is a MG TD kit car built on a 1969 VW for sale in my area. The car has an auto shift transmission.
What should I look for when inspecting the car. The body and interior is in excellant shape and it runs. What kind of price range for this vintage car.

The VW experts will pipe in on the drive train stuff, I’m sure. We get asked about price all the time. Depends on the Kit manufacturer for one thing. I think the British Coach Works and the Classic Roadsters Dutchess tend to get a little more $ because of rarity and kit quality.
Basically depending on condition, we’re seeing prices from $2500 to $7500. I have seen some for less dollars, but they need a LOT of work.
Also, I think the front engine Ford V6’s are worth the BIG BUCKS, but that could be a somewhat biased opinion
Good Luck!

August 25, 2009 at 9:37 am #239606Jimbo, Welcome to the forum. Rich’s answer concerning prices is right on target, Some cars may be over priced but I have not seen too many of good quality at the lower end of the scale. Some of our members have recently got some nice cars in the $2000 range but these are exceptions, not an everyday event. Personally, I would be hesitant to buy a car with the autostick .My son had one back in the 80s which gave us some trouble as it is a rather complex system. It consist of a three speed manual shift transaxle with a vacumn operated clutch and a fluid drive converter to enable the car to sit still while still in gear. The shift lever has a switch built in and when you touch the lever to shift gears the switch actavates the vacumn clutch so the gears can then be shifted However ,if you don’t like a 4 speed manual shift this may be an option to be desired. It may not be possible to convert to a manual trans since the autostick cars did not have a tube for the clutch cable in the floor tunnel.
August 25, 2009 at 11:08 am #239607Thank you for your answers. The car is complete and in very good shape. I did have concerns about the transmission. How costly and diffucult would it be to change both the motor and trans.
August 25, 2009 at 1:16 pm #239608The VW Autostick, as it was called, had a few problems. I suspect in a much lighter TD kit, they’d not be as bad. They used to hang up between reverse and first.
I know a guy that has converted a couple of these, one actually in a TD Replica, but he’s a 50+ year VW expert and knew exactly what parts were required (4 speed transaxle, pedal assembly, clutch cable, etc.)
I think they use the same mounts and IRS half shafts.
Why would you want to change the engine?

Just thinking that if I bought this car and it had a problem I would need to replace both the engine and the trans. I don’t know if the Autostick is worth the trouble. The guy selling it called it an electric shift, is that something different. I know it does not have a clutch pedal.
August 25, 2009 at 8:51 pm #239610Jimbo, I think the term autostick and electric shift are referring to the same type transmission. As Pink MG said ,the conversion is possible but does require a lot of parts which could be hard to get as well as expensive. As far as I know, the engine in the car will work with either trans.A local VW guru was going to change my son’s VW from autostick to 4speed manual and had all the parts, but when he saw that the car did not have the clutch cable tube installed from the factory,he would not make the changeover because he said if he did not get the tube in exactly the right position it would not work properly.Just be sure if you have this done that the person knows how to do it right. It can be done and if I were going to buy this car I would also be planning to make the change to 4 speed manual and that would also figure in what I would pay for it at the start.
