I bought my TDr almost a year ago and have spent all that time just restoring and upgrading it … could barely drive it when I got it (too small, I am 6′-4″, 190, with 35″ inseam) and haven’t driven it more than a dozen miles since I started restoring it, just transferring from one shop to another. When I look at the bills I have run up, it makes me wonder why. So, here I am in L.A. with a little time on my hands, so I visited Beverly Hills Car Club, a classic car dealer that lets you sit in their vehicles. For me, that means, “find out if I fit”. This was a useful trip for me because I found out that there was no way I could fit in a real TD or almost any English car that I tried. On the “real” TD, the top of the windshield was at nose height and the steering wheel was riding my thighs and in my face. Much as I like the car, I can’t have an original. Ditto for a TR3 or any of several Jaguars. Those big steering wheels are a killer for me. About all I could fit in were an XKE coupe (not convertible), Porsche 356, or old Corvette Stingray, and none of them were particularly comfortable, either. By comparison, I have lowered the seat bases on my TDR so far, and tilted the seat back so much, that I can actually fit in it very well. Of course I look like Inspector Gadget climbing in or out, but I am used to that. In fact, the upholsterer is going to have to raise me up an inch or two so I have a better view out. So, this was a reassuring trip that shows me that I can have a car that I like in spite of my size (even if my choices are limited). Makes me wonder … are all Englishmen about 5′-5″? 😕 . Now, if the painter and upholsterer guys can just FINISH UP!!! maybe I can enjoy my TDr before summer is over.

Just another advantage of a TDr!

July 19, 2015 at 3:03 pm #265219I second that. If you are determined to restore an older vehicle to factory condition and appearance you are locking yourself into all the shortcommings of a 30-60 year old machine. If you are simply “building” a fun car you can make it your own. 🙂 Kall2015-07-19 15:03:42
