I bought a MiGi already built, with a top and side curtains included but not installed. I think they are from MG Magic but I can’t swear to it.
The windshield has wind wings and I can’t figure out how the front of the side curtain is supposed to be fastened. There’s no sleeve for a stiffener and it wouldn’t fit in the windshield channel, anyway, because of the windwing brackets. Does anyone have a clue? I had the top installed by an auto trim shop and they couldn’t figure it out, either.
July 15, 2015 at 5:30 pm #265151Many of out TDr’s have problems with side curtain to windwing interference and we each have different ways of tackling the problem. (It sounds like your TDr is not a BCW or an Allison, both of which have real MG-like windshields.)
Also, there are a lot of differences between our tops and our side curtains.
I have never seen side curtains that fit into the front facing channel of the windshield.
More and better pictures of the top erected as well as flat pic of the side curtains would help.
I’m not absolutely convinced that you have the photo labeled correctly regarding “front”.
July 15, 2015 at 6:20 pm #265152Ditto most of what Roy said.
I’ll assume you have “front” correct because the curtain fits the rest of the roof cutout in this orientation. Also, the leading edge of the window portion is typically straight, not curved. The leading edges of the curtain looks unfinished to me. Are the curtains longer than the side openings? By that I mean, when zipped to the roof, do the leading eges of the vinyl extend beyond the windshield frame side post?If they do…my best guess is that the curtains are not finished off.Fold them back to align with the frame side posts (folding to the inside, possible also sewing them flat).Attach female snaps to the curtains, with corresponding male snaps on the windshield frame side posts.PMOSSBERG2015-07-15 18:26:05

July 15, 2015 at 6:29 pm #265153I just read through the FiberFab, MiGi and CMC assembly manuals and found nothing there to help. They all infer the curtains are fully finished off.
Didn’t need to read the Classic Roadsters Ltd. Manual. I’m intimately familiar with that one! 😉I suspect, as you do, that your roof is not orginal to the car. It’s aftermarket, whether MG Magic or someplace else.It makes sense to me they might leave the curtains unfinished. There can be so much variance with these cars, even within the same manufacturer. Leaving an aftermarket roof/curtain set unfinished would allow each to be tailored to a specific TDr.PMOSSBERG2015-07-15 18:32:43

July 17, 2015 at 6:31 am #265154My side curtains fit into the channel in the windshield. They are cut out in 3 sections and fit around the windshield wings. Later today I will take a pic a post it here so you can see what I mean.

InactiveI also have side curtains that fit into the windshield frame as the top does. Real pain to get into car when they are attached. Also have side curtains that snap on the outside of the windshield frame on side and on the inside. Also hard to get into when side curtains are installed.
Looks like side curtain will have to be fit to windshield frame after windshield is fit to car. Top shop or boat shop could do the sewing.
July 17, 2015 at 12:24 pm #265158Curtains into the front of the windshield frame? That’s a new one on me. I’m trying to visualize getting into or out of the car. Failed.
Not very MGTD like: you’re supposed to get wet when it rains. ????July 17, 2015 at 6:38 pm #265159First time I used them was on Wednesday on the way to the Pittsburgh Countryside Tour because it rained all the way there. It’s a pain in the behind and you do wet getting in and out. In my car I have to put the front tabs into the channel, snap the front tab on the roof to the top windshield frame, get in the car, zip the top of the curtain shut, put my hand through the zippered slit on the bottom of the curtain, and snap the bottom of the curtain to the door. Just a snap if you ask me! 😉

"Drive Happy"July 18, 2015 at 11:56 am #265161I’ve posted this one a dozen times. Well, maybe not a dozen, but a lot. 😉
When I Googled for pics of the tool, one of my own posts came up fourth in the search results. Beat out lots of retailers.
Anyway, this will help you fasten those snaps on the windshield frame, from inside the car!
Available lots of places, especially boat product retailers. But here’s just one:

October 25, 2015 at 11:56 am #265162It seems that a lot of us have questions or problems with our convertible top. Or have seen others that they prefer on other’s cars. Examples:
1. Paul’s top is beautiful, but is it practical if you have toll booths?
2. The clear windows in Roy’s side curtains zip down. (A feature that I really love.)
3. A lot of the Fiberfabs have rear zip out/down windows. A nice feature.
4. I saw a top once that could be completely removed without removing the bows. A nice feature?
5. I believe that an Allison had MG-like framed and removable side curtains (but am not sure). While these allow opening of the doors without unsnapping and unzipping, and they are very original, my experience is that they are noisy and leak badly in a rain while underway.
I have been shopping for one for 4 years now and simply can not afford the $1000+/- that a top and side curtains cost to have manufactured by a marine sail shop. I have had about 4 estimates and they were all within pennies of each other.
I was looking at John Barry’s top in another post and noticed that he has (apparently) an unusual fitment of the front to the windshield frame. John’s top looks to snap on the leading edge similar to the way that my old 1959 BugEye’d Sprite.
(It even leaked when it wasn’t raining.) Most of us have a flat bar that fits into a slot in the leading edge of the windshield frame. The only MG-like originals that I know of are on a BCW which are almost, if not exactly, like on the TD (and others). I don’t remember how the Allison top attaches.About 2 years ago, when Happy Jack owned a Fiberfab, and a BCW he needed some canvas, I took my Daytona over. We discovered something that I was a total surprise. We took all the tops and tonneau covers off and found that all three buckets are different sized. Not by much, but by enough to make a difference. (I am not talking about snap locations)
At the VaBch show, I noticed that Vicenc has an unusual location of the hinges for his bows. I believe that a Fiberfab top would not work on his Fiberfab without modification.
I once bought, what was claimed to be, a Fiberfab top for my Daytona and there were too many differences to make it work. Sold it.
The punch line: Be careful if you are buying a top online.
