Today on my way home i heard a large pop and banging noise. My first thought was i blew a rod .As it turned out i blew a spark plug out. After trying to put it back i think the hole is stripped.Has anyone ever put a healycoil in?Can i drive it to the nearest garage about 5 miles away in this condition.
June 25, 2012 at 9:30 pm #250932It can be, and has been done and sometimes it lasts for a long time. I think that I’d feel better (were it mine) buying and replacing the head with a carefully checked over used head or a rebuilt one. You are going to have to do about the same amount of labor either way. Installing a heli-coil is really pretty simple. If you drove it gently, no big hills, you’d probably be ok to drive it to the shop just don’t lug it or over-rev it. If you decide to get a used head, PM me. Maybe I can help.
June 25, 2012 at 9:59 pm #250933Which plug was it? You really should check the head over very carefully before installing a heli-coil. It’s most likely that someone just over-torqued the spark plug but, you may have a cracked head. Yes, I’ve installed heli-coils and it is really not all that difficult if you are somewhat mechanically inclined. Heck, I once, many years ago, JB-welded a spark plug that had been stripped. It got me home and it lasted for many years and even saved me money on subsequent plug changes since I only had to buy three. Total time down was about 3 hours and I barely got dirty “gluing” the plug in the hole. (Do not try this at home. Not recommended.)
June 26, 2012 at 4:17 pm #250934Today my car went into shop for a heli coil just curious how long it will take to put it in and the cost of the kit want to make sure i’m not getting ripped
June 26, 2012 at 4:30 pm #250935What exactly did they say that they were going to do and what are they charging you? Are they pulling the head off?
June 26, 2012 at 4:37 pm #250936They didnt say all the said was they have done alot of them, price wouldn’t be bad and they will order the kit be in tomorrow.
June 27, 2012 at 7:34 am #250937It should be fine, Greg. Don’t have to pull the head if you can suck any shavings out of the combustion chamber. The coil will be stronger than the aluminum threads were. Don’t worry.
June 27, 2012 at 7:41 am #250938Ed, yep, many would try to repair without pulling the head. That is why I asked Greg what they were planning to do?
June 27, 2012 at 9:32 pm #250939well its all done let you know tomorrow all the details.
June 28, 2012 at 1:27 pm #250940Well the coil 50 bucks and 80 to put it in had trouble because of tins hard to reach spark plug. Did not remove heads . Car runs perfect.
June 28, 2012 at 1:41 pm #250941That’s great Greg.
June 28, 2012 at 3:50 pm #250942Hey Dick ! great to here from you. Just to let you know i took your advice on the oil. Pressure always starts out at 60 never goes below 40
June 28, 2012 at 5:59 pm #250943It’s also better for a flat tappet motor.
Good to hear from you also. -
