Does anyone know what the diameter of the steering wheel is on the original TDs? I looked at the TD website and the steering wheel is similar to a VW “Banjo” steering wheel but the diameter looks way larger.

June 17, 2011 at 9:30 pm #245201Thanks Paul. The steering wheel was one of the items missing from my kit. There are several on The Samba that are 13.5 inches and a few 15 inches. And on the ole eBay there’s a Banjo style steering wheel I’m looking at.
Would an original TD wheel fit the splines on a VW shaft I wonder. Things that make you go hmmm.

June 17, 2011 at 9:48 pm #245203the original td wheel has a key way and hex nut and not much else.no wiring for horn or turn signals. probably easier to get a complete td shaft ans use a remote or aftermarket horn and signal switches.
then there is the extra diameter to deal with, maybe raise the whole assembly up higher .June 17, 2011 at 11:24 pm #245204What Mike said!
The original TD wheel will not fit the VW column.

June 18, 2011 at 6:41 am #245205Turns out the 40 Ford banjo wheels will fit a VW hub
with just a little filing. 17-inch wheel and apparently available in
beat-up shape from bone yards. A cool hack.I got mine from SoCal. Direct bolt-on for the three-hole Grant hub. They were supposed to send a 15 inch version but didn’t. I still see ads for a smaller one here and there. The one I got, at 17 inches, is indeed something of a squeeze. I fit under it easily enough (at 5-7 and 155 lbs) but you should be aware: my sister in law is about my height and twice as heavy, and she jumped behind the wheel and drove the car without complaint, first chance she got.
There is also room to adjust the column up a bit, though that will take some engineering and cutting.

June 18, 2011 at 2:17 pm #245206Cool find Ed!
Reminds me of my 1965 Plymouth Satellite. A reproduction windshield washer fluid pump sells for over $100. But…the same pump was used in late 1950s Ford Pickup trucks. THOSE pumps sell for about $25 or $30!
Go figure!

June 18, 2011 at 9:43 pm #245207Ah, the link is back then! Good dealy.
For any interested, the SoCal wheel is here. Quite spendy at $360, I know, but no more so than the Flat 4, once all the accessories you need for the Flat 4 are counted (Boss kit: $50, horn button: $90?!), and it’s an almost drop-in replacement for the old style Grants all our cars came with, AND it’s basically the exact same thing as the Bluemels “Brooklands” wheel that was a period accessory on TCs, TDs and TFs (plus Allards, Bentleys, Morgans, etc). (And those are jolly more expensive, if that is even possible).
It is a full 17 inches around though, not the 16 it’s advertised to be or the 15.5 inches some others claim to be.
So take that into account.
