If I want to remove only the smaller torsion leaves on my VW ball joint suspension, do I need to remove the center grub screw? Im hoping not, as it is quite inaccessable. Or do the grubs only hold the large leaves. Its been 40 years since I have been inside a VW front beam and I just cant remember.

I do think so  the center grub holds the leaves to provide torsion .

Given the way they’re made—with the divot for the grub screw on the edge of the large leaves only—the small ones should slide out. But they probably won’t until you loosen the center grub screw. I just rebuilt the beam on my Spyder and it was a real adventure sorting out how the height adjusters worked on this one: the grub screw was buried inside it! You’ve got it easy with stock or stepped Avis adjuster.
