I’ve pretty much decided to disconnect the drive shaft and flat tow to Carlisle. I’m looking at tow bars on Ebay. There is a universal bolt on style for about $54.00, probably the same one that’s sold at harbor freight. 5000 # max, which is more than enough for our cars. Has anyone ever had any experience with these? I know I’ll have to do some mod’s on the front of the frame to make it easy to put on and remove but now that work doesn’t get in my way I’ve got more time to play in the garage.
January 6, 2014 at 5:18 pm #259277I think this is a link to one of them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/330909097767?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
PMOSSBERG2014-01-06 19:16:09January 6, 2014 at 6:40 pm #259278That looks like it would work. I’ll look around the other forums and see if anyone has any insight.
January 6, 2014 at 7:00 pm #259279Montie, This looks almost exactly like the tow bar that I used to tow my MGTF with. I had it for 16 years and towed many many times approximately 30k miles in my many moves up and down the east coast while I was still in the Submarine Force.
I used to remove the front bumper, put it on the floor in the passenger side and bolt the hitch to the attachment points where the bumper went. Don’t know if you can to this on your TDr but be careful, the attachment of the hitch, not the hitch itself will be your weakest link. Also, it is quite important that the hitch be approximately level when installed. A slight down angle from the tow car/truck to the TD is ok, but it should never be an up angle. These are MY words. Based upon my experience. You will likely get other opinions.Don’t get yourself up in a knot about it. When you get your hitch, get it rigged up, tow it around your town for a while. Soon, your biggest danger is forgetting that your TDr is back there. It’s easy to do since they are so light.….and don’t forget to take the toad out of gear and if your steering wheel locks, make sure that it is not locked. I much prefer magnetic tow lights and they are relatively cheap. I think that the ones that U-Haul sells are the best although you can get cheaper ones at Harbor Freight. And the last thing is to plan your gas stops. No backing up. Don’t worry, it’s easy to drive through in almost all gas stations.See you at Carlisle. If you can get to Carlisle before it gets dark, you’ll have plenty of help in the motel parking lot, without asking. There are always guys there with complete tool boxes and (even) floor jacks. You won’t be the only one getting a bit dirty. It’s part of the fun. 😆January 6, 2014 at 7:15 pm #259280I’d like to know where Roy thinks you’re gonna mount those magnetic tow lights.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackJanuary 6, 2014 at 7:38 pm #259282I have a pair of tow lights with plastic flaps on them, that are intended to closed up in doors, hatches, VW engine lids, etc. Since I was towing my TDr with the top down, I just clamped them down to the back edges of the tub using those rubber-footed C-clamp thingies…

Slowly coming back from the ashes...January 6, 2014 at 7:38 pm #259283I got the lights covered. I made a flat bar that fits over the rear bumper brackets, between the body and bumper that the lights can stick to. That was the easy part.
January 6, 2014 at 7:45 pm #259284Here’s what I did. PVC + the Harbor Freight Cheapo light kit + an hour. Easy on & off with a single bungie.
January 6, 2014 at 8:56 pm #259285How to mount magnetic tow lights? I told you that you would get other opinions. I choose the simplest way. I put a layer of gorilla tape over the magnets to eliminate scratching the chrome and simply let them grab on the outside of the bumper over-riders. I have done it for about 3k miles on MiGi – no problems. EZ on EZ off.
