I have no doubt the doghouse cooler will be better, but the standard cooler in the shroud worked for millions of Volkswagens so should work on mine! I keep thinking something else must be wrong! I haven’t tried a vacuum dist yet ( my car came to me with a Pertronix flamethrower on it). I don’t need or want any more power, I don’t have this car f…[Read more]

I can’t seem to get my 1600sp to not run too hot. It’s ok if I keep it under 60 mph but it’ll go to 220 and beyond if I push it. Last evening I tryed out for top speed and got about 78 mph but oil light was flickering and temp guage well over 210 when I stopped I have shielded over the rear of the engine to eliminate recirculation timing is 30…[Read more]

Have a look at this one! It’s here in Alberta ( or maybe BC now) I’ll have to go see it in person!
It’s an original though, not a replicaPMOSSBERG2013-08-09 14:03:45

My insurance with 1 million liability is about the same as Pauls with Haggerty.
I have never had insurance with them until this year

There is no doubt that millions of vw ran for years without any crutches. It’s just that mine seems to have a little looseness in the bottom end and I really don’t want to rebuild this engine so I’m curious if a prelube setup would extend the life of my engine in it’s present state! I don’t think that knocking on cold startup can be good for it.…[Read more]

I can get a wasserboxer in there close to free except for the rad and plumbing which should be the same as a Subie would be. The van guys are wanting rid of their wasserboxers because they are so underpowered in a huge Vanagon or Westy

The watercooled vw boxer engine is significantly quieter than it’s aircooled brother though the engines are built very similarly. The differences are hydraulic lifters, no fan, and a water jacket to muffle the sound domewhat. All that tin on a aircooled must contribute to the “can full of washers” sound somewhat too. I was looking seriously into…[Read more]

of course I know, many people, probably most people have happy motoring with there aircooled bug for many years! unhappily it hasn’t been my experience! But then, all mine have been higher milers when I got them. For me, I love the little buggers until I start them then I hate the sound of them! Even the best running ones sound like they are…[Read more]

At the risk of offending a few VW purists, a TD replica utilizing a beetle pan is about the best use for a beetle I know! The original body is butt ugly, but the replica is so cute! I’m just not a fan of the aircooled nowadays. I really don’t know where it got it’s reputation for being reliable!

Of course, Subi would be the ultimate choice! I have a 2012 Subaru outback and love it. but a wasserboxer would be a lot less expensive conversion AND more of a boltin than a subi. My MG is my toy car, I don’t want a lot more money tied up in it!

everything back there gets damned hot! I use the VW mexican header from cip.1. It is cheap and I like the sound of it! I put some pink fiberglass on top of it and wrapped light aluminum around it to shield the fiberglass. seems to work ok! My engine has a slight knock on a cold startup until it gets oil pressure so I’m afraid to go TOO FAR f…[Read more]

Well, My wife won’t even ride in the TD! ( no airbags, no head restraints, no legroom, yada, yada)
So I’d be going it myself. She doesn’t even want to go to Ontario in the summer! ( too hot) My biggest concern is the reliability of a 40 year old VW 1600sp that has had no repairs to it in it’s lifetime that I know of! Who knows how many actual m…[Read more]

If you have the right shocks they should work, many of the so called right shocks are to long though!

And I’ll second that, Edsnova! I am delighted the way my car handles now! ( removed all the small bars and installed shorter shocks) If you have standard shocks and a lowered front end then you are likely riding right on your shocks and it will not handle that way!

Thanks!, didn’t think so! I have removed all the small leaves and installed shorter shocks and the difference is unbelievable! I also put a 1/8 shim in to increase the caster, makes the car feel really stable on the road. still a little squirrelly in gusty crosswinds but no worse than my Toyota Echo.

Hi!
I have a MIGI on a 1970 vw chassis. My question on suspension is: When you remove leaves from the VW front beam is it really necessary as many claim, to glue, weld or otherwise insert short pieces of spring to compensate for the leaves you have removed? I have looked into the center support and the spindle arms and as far as I can see th…[Read more]
