Rain-X’d the windshield. Made a new ground for the tail lights (what a difference!). Tightened the left front wheel bearing (why does that one keep loosening??). Put a little air in the tires: 18 front and 26 rear, 26 in the spare. Ready.

Well, progress.
Have you tried flipping those headers left to right so the collector faces forward? That might buy you some room near the firewall if you have room under the car for the requisite pipes.

Sounds like a plan then. Gas station on W. Nursery Rd. and then Hornes for early lunch, gas up and try for VA Beach b4 rush hour.

Yes and I’m gonna keep giving you shit anyway, just because I know you know. I figure by now (4 pm Saturday) you should have everything done but the mufflers and maybe the fan. 😉
Seriously, though: this doesn’t look too bad. What’s the plan for the driver’s side mount? Gonna just cut it off and re-weld, or??
Also: headers? I’m thinking routing…[Read more]

Well there ya go: it was meant to be. Plug that baby in, stand up your radiator-thingie, hook up the hoses, fill the crank case with oil and and you’re done. Should I head up Sunday afternoon to witness the Ceremonial First Firing And Test Drive?
You’ll still have a week to sort it before VA Beach! 😮

Any horn works. A lot of guys go with the big Wolo “Bad Boy.” Some dudes have an air horn wired to the steering wheel for emergency “scare ’em outta the lane” use, plus a milder “toot toot” horn wired to a button for “hey baby, goin’ my way?” situations.
My car had stock VW horns and they went bad so I got some cheapo Harbor Freight or similar…[Read more]

You boys are singing my song.
When I put the Subie in Bridget I promised myself I’d go back through the wiring and neaten things up/correct some mistakes (mine and the PO’s). But so far I ain’t saw fit to do it. Signal lights stop when I hit the brakes. Brake lights with the headlights on don’t seem to get any brighter. All kinds of Lucas-like…[Read more]

Lot of speculation on line about the weight differences. Everything from “about 110 pounds” to “about 10 pounds.”

I think it’s gonna be closer to 100 than 10.
Here’s an MG guy who says the crate 302 weighs 300…[Read more]

And done.
Shrunk it down, wrapped in ‘lectric tape and zip-tied to the main wiring loom to keep it from falling back down to where it got burned. Test-drive and all seems to be in order.

Ah, well-done, Andy. 20 miles in two years? This person is in for some shaming. 🙂 Hopefully he’ll redeem himself now!

Yep, I was about to say.
Remember when you put the new one in to line it up right-careful with the steering shaft, and to bend over those metal tabs on the clamp nut.

Update: So I turned the key on in the nice quiet garage and got no fuel pump whirr. Checked the fuses there, the connections, and finally wired it direct to the battery to make sure it would whirr if so energized.
It did.
Had a closer look at my burnt O2 connector and noticed a bare wire. A-HA! Something hot got grounded to the cat, and that…[Read more]
