    @georgeb

    Well, I just learned a whole lot on ways to make a strap for the hood. I have a piece of trim which is just screwed on that goes down the Center of my hood, its not chrome but looks like polished aluminum. Looking at Pauls setup I think I could adapt. If I got a book case channel I could mount it with longer screws and nuts and attach a seat belt in the same manor, although mine hinges on the driver side. Again, Thanks guys

    Hahaha…I thought that looked like a seatbelt…I’ll have to figure a good way to mount something for the hood.

    SWEET! Thanks for the photos Also gives me an idea to improve on the the way to hold up the hood with that strap you have. Mine is some cheasy bar that works but stinks. Although I have the tank in a different spot its a nice clean look you have, hopefully I’ll learn something thanks so much for the pictures!

    I would appreciate it if someone who has a finished off trunk box under their hood send pictures. Something else I was considering doing but need an idea on how to do it…Thanks

    Thanks for the two cents, never would of thought to use bed liner paint for both hoods underside is not finished on mine, either of them. Your right I have the hood removed so best time to do it. I also read here where some put in a shutoff on the gas line since its all accessible and I thought of that also since I wish to re arrange my fuel line anyway. It right now goes over the battery to the tunnel and that looks sloppy in my opinion. My only though is would the underside keep the heat in by the engine since most bed liner paint i have seen is black? Or would it matter? Thanks again

    Thank you all for the advice and tips. I have lurked on this site for weeks just reading the manuals you have and the techy forum. I have been a helicopter Mechanic/Supervisor for almost 40 years and this VW thing is very new to me, so if I ask what you mean please don’t take it personally I just really dont know but am willing to learn! 😛

    There is nothing stamped on the case below the generator mount. Just the firing order on the generator mount, no letter’s nothing….maybe the case was after market rebuild?

    It has a single port intake, although this is my first VW so I’m still learning to figure out what things are, I’ve been a mechanic all my life. The fuel tank was mounted with clamps AND held down by silicon. Looking at the cars pictures on here I assumed it was a Fiberfab. Although my brother had the car he bought it off they man who had it built. According to the title it was built in 1988 and has a Sticker on the cooling shroud “Chassis by Cargem” and has another sticker on the door “Assembled in Michigan. There is more paperwork that my brother has sent up in the mail I forgot at his house.

    I believe there were CV joints on both ends of the axles, or I noticed boots on both ends. So far with you guys amazing knowledge of the VW’s it looks like I have some what of a 69-’71 VW with a Karman Ghia front end. The last thing I have to do is open the valve covers look inside and determine if its a 1500 rebuild or a 1600, That will have to wait until I get back to Va…Cool beans!!!

    Roy, I don’t know what kind of rear it is, actually I don’t remember because I wasn’t paying attention to the rear but I did look at the CV joints, do they call them CV joints on VW’s? To see if they were torn, dry rotted and such.

    Thanks Roy. As far as the Tank and lines I had done exactly as you said, I had the tank drained and I cleaned it out. I was very surprised it was in as good as shape as it was not very much varnish on the sides at all. Compared to the carb was caked with that and other crap. I disconnected the fuel lines and sprayed carb cleaner and pushed clean gas with a plastic syringe through the lines and the pump. I plan on replacing all rubber fuel lines when the car is back home as they were somewhat dry rotted.

    Paul, I???ll have my brother take a picture of the engine to give you guys a visual on it. I looked at numbers stamped on the distributer and it was a darn long one that ended with ???009??? thats all I remember Wink   so your guess and my assumption is prolly the Bosch 009.

    I am positive it is a ???single??? port engine, there is no split going into the head. At lest that???s what I read about the difference between single and dual port engines. The only other is there is a tube attached to the intake (on the underside) that goes from the left side muffler to the right side muffler.

    As Sam mentioned I have Auto Zones and Advanced auto stores out the ying yang around here and I can surely wait for the order.

    Roy, I???m more a Jack Daniels and beer man myself, but I can have some Glenfiddich for special occasions at my pool, just not a beach party! LOL Now Caviar???sorry but the first time I had it in ???75 with East German Soldiers(yes I know Im dating myself) I almost barfed up all that good German beer. The last time I had in Iraq with some locals that had it imported, well fish eggs doesn???t go well in 125 degree weather. Lost my lunch again..

    One more thing , the car has front disk brakes and drums in the rear ..if that matters for figuring the year of the frame. This is a great start, and I can’t wait to get back to Va. and tow it home

    Again Thanks

    Thanks all for the warm welcome. For the members from Jersey I grew up in North Jersey and lived there until 2004. Some of the Soprano’s was filmed in the town I went to school. 😆 Already have a few questions but I’ll see if I can use the search to see if they were asked already..
