Allen, I think that you’ll find there’s no difference with the alternator regarding excitation being required. Alternators still use regulators – it’s just that the regulator is built in for VWs, and not external.

Nobody wrote:Yes that is correct, on the beetle the ignition switch is part of the steering column. You should still be able to trace it and wire it how you will. That actually looks like a Type 3 wiring diagram to me.Here is a link for a 69-71 beetle diagram.Beginning with 1968 models. Prior to that, the ignition switch was located on the d…[Read more]

Could one of you guys show a pic of that rear hinge mechanism? My early FF uses 4 of the spring loaded latches and lifts off. I like the wide-open access that can be handy at times, but it is a PITA just to check the oil. I’d like to consider that the hinge since there’s no need to use a support.

I’ve got a motorcycle radio/MP3 player that I plan to hide in a console, then put the speakers under the seat. It uses a length of wire for an antenna, which can be hidden under the carpet. It’s operated by a wired remote about 1.5″ x 1.5″ so hopefully it won’t be readily noticed. The only time I’d need to access the radio itself is swap the USB…[Read more]

This is all reassuring, since I’ve yet to get mine on the road. But, leaving it parked with the top down is a concern. Because mine retains the stock 69 steering column and ignition switch, theft is not the concern as much as just inviting someone to rummage through it. I do plan to hide the radio to reduce that temptation, at least…

Agree, Greg, but that doesn’t stop thieves from rummaging through a parked car. I’ve thought about installing a blinking LED to my dash to simulate an armed alarm system, since LEDs draw so little power it would take weeks to discharge the battery. Combine that with one of the fake alarm decals, and you’ d discourage most would-be thieves. Nothing…[Read more]

Thanks for that Johnstone lead – I’ll try to locate some of those. I can find the piggybacks locally, but I prefer the others (which VW used) much more if space isn’t an issue. With piggybacks, it is difficult to unplug one wire without unplugging both….

Nice neat work! Wish the orinal builder had taken that much care with mine. Do you plan on labelling the fuses, once wired?Where are you finding 2>1 spade connectors?KentT2015-02-22 18:34:26

Roy, if the unassembled kit I posted about is truly a Duchess, as Paul suggests, the front splashpan and fender area is quite different from my early Fiberfab with the exposed steering shaft. It appears that with that kit the chrome grille shell will simply bolt in, between the fenders. Then, a small flat panel is used between the fenders to…[Read more]

The hole in the bottom of the grill shell is where the manual cranking handle for the original MG was inserted. IMO, that just means it’s a reproduction MG grille shell, which rules out the Daytona Migi, I think.

The thing that amazes me is the price difference between used Speedsters and TDrs…If you were careful, you could make a buck flipping Speedsters… I think that’s virtually impossible with TDrs. The donor car could be worth more than the finished replica…
