  • I have a used front bumper bar, without over-riders.  It has scratches but no major dents or dings.  Let me know if interested.

  • The stock lubrication/cooling system of a VW with dual relief valves in the engine will bypass the oil cooler and dump the oil back into the engine somewhere between 42-45 PSI of oil pressure.  That’s to prevent rupturing the oil cooler or blowing out the rubber seals.

Sounds like there may be enough wear in your engine (likely cam bearings) t…

    White (?) Warning light?
The warning lights in the speedometer use a thin piece of colored plastic to make them appear green or red — the bulbs behind them are clear/white – so that piece of colored film has likely come loose and fallen off…

Typically, the wheels (and mainshaft) aren’t turning much, when you shift to reverse — so synchronizer isn’t a factor…

Sounds like it is not a shifter linkage issue to me… I’d try the synthetic — it will make the synchronizer operate more smoothly, though still perhaps not enough to completely get rid of the symptoms.

How well does the shifter work when upshifting from first gear to second gear?  If that’s OK, it is likely a worn synchronizer, as Roy suggests.

You may want to consider draining the transmission oil, and replacing it with synthetic.  That will often make old, worn transmissions easier to live with…
  • Geez — that makes me wonder that the builder was thinking.  Must have been the sand drags…

That kind of a high-lift, short durations cam, and single-spring heads doesn’t make much sense.
That much lift with such fast ramps makes dual springs almost essential to prevent valve float….

My recommendation is to keep the RPMs down close to that of a…

You need to get that pesky left Dell sorted out before spending dyno $$, IMO…

  • A sagging rear suspension which results in a “nose up attitude” can also be a contributor in VWs “wandering” at higher speeds.  The smooth, flat floor pan has a tendency to “sail.”

Hold our hand out, palm down, at highway speeds and see the lift and drag change as you change its position…

IMO, the best stance for a performance VW is a very s…

How well it would work as an alternative would depend mainly on the driver…

They’re intended for two totally different uses:
    1.  Shift Light to tell the driver when to optimally shift to keep the engine in its power band
    2.  Rev limiter to prevent mechanical damage from over-revving the engine, such as when you “miss a gear” when shifting…

I’ve used them in the past, and put one on the newly-built engine.  I use the less expensive variety — the rev-limiting rotor button.

The one you’re showing is a much nicer alternative, and gracefully limits the revs, whereas the rotor buttons simply shut off all spark — quite abrupt, but still better than engine damage from over-revving…
  • That’s a strange one.  Swing-axle pan, yet 69-or-later speedo, wiring harness and switches, it appears.

Dash, windshield, front splashpan, exposed steering shaft, etc., looks like an early FiberFab, yet it has TD-style headlight mounts and grille which were separately priced options…
  • The Porsche and VW Bus trannies are physically much bigger (and stronger) than the Type I.  You might run into space issues under the rear “luggage area” behind the seat, so fiberglass work MAY be required.  Perhaps more significant, the shift rod sits higher in the tranny than on a Type I, and most people who convert use some king of off-set c…[Read more]

Agree with Ed.  Rods are not a common problem.  Rocker arms & pushrods are more common issues, for example.

  • Like those hubcaps, wheels and trim rings, Jack!

  • Jack,

Bolt-on valve covers are notorious for leaking.  The factory-type, held on with the spring bail, seal much better… and don’t even try the rubber/neopreme valve cover gaskets.  Nothing seals as well as the factory-type cork gaskets.
The reasons for the vented valve covers are:
     (1) higher RPM VW engines  tend to build up crankcase pres…

Ditto.  I’m a bit surprised by them, in fact.  You did some tigntening/sealing of the engine tin, as I recall.  Sounds like it paid dividends.
Will be interesting what the readings are in July/August temps, or in heavier traffic…
