I’d like to see how these two listed features were accomplished on a 66 VW chassis:
Power SteeringPower BrakesI don’t like the dashboard AT ALL — the gauges, oak wood, the padded leading edge, etc., but other than the dash that is the nicest interior I’ve seen yet on a TDr. With 500 hours of labor involved, it should be…KentT2014-02-04 09:38:05

Yep, it is theoretically a replaceable bearing, but would likely take a special tool that precisely fits to drive it out — or press it out, most likely…I’ve never received one with a clutch kit, however. Throw-out bearings, yes, needle bearings, no… Did they also include the felt seal that keeps the grease away from the clutch plate?Like…[Read more]

Nobody wrote:Hmmm, Interesting that when I got the clutch kit it came with the gland nut bearing. I assumed it would be replaceable since they included the needle bearing but not the gland nut.It likely came with the throw-out bearing. The throw-out bearing is what moves up against the pressure plate when you press the clutch pedal. It…[Read more]

Well they get torqued to something like 350 ft lbs or something — don’t recall the exact number, but it is huge.Gene Berg always cautioned to never reuse a gland nut for this reason — that the high torque may have stretched the steel between the threads, and when you torque it that tight again, it could crack…In addition, the gland nut has…[Read more]

I use Chrome most of the time, but Internet Explorer 10 occasionally.IE 10 doesn’t display the same error message (I must not have the “show detailed errors option turned on) but instead gives an HTTP 500 general error: “The website cannot display this page.”So, it is getting the database error, it just doesn’t display the details of it…Paul, I…[Read more]

Roy, I’ve been getting those same errors for months when I post a new topic or reply to one, but the update happens…

Now enroute to Schu. Thanks, Don. It was fun reliving that read — though somehow it wasn’t quite as fascinating and motivating as when I read it originally about 50 years ago…

Not sure what had happened to the pics above, and I can no longer edit that old of a topic to try to fix them… But, I uploaded them again in this Reply (then deleted them) and it seems to have solved this issue. Meanwhile, I ran across a pic from the web that I’d stored that shows a real red TD with red seats and black dash, though b…[Read more]

Also found bolt-on frame stiffeners at BGW, the manufacturer of those ’40 Ford noses and such. They don’t look as beefy as the ones above.

Looking good! Is that an early FiberFab kit also, based upon the looks of that front splash pan?
IMO, you’re wise in following Gabe’s lead. If you can do anything close to what he has done with his, you’ll have a wonderful TDr. His pretty amazing! -

I tend to agree, Ed, on both counts.
1. I’ve seen no signs of rust on mine so far, either through the access plate nor underneath the shifter in its new location. Further, most of the rust-throughs that I have seen in the lower VW body appeared to have originated elsewhere, whether road salt and water coming in from the outside (leaking main bo… -

I’m not sure what kind of exhaust is on the 1500 SP. I think it is some kind of old European Monza-style or something. I just know it doesn’t fit for crap….
It has individual runners, like an extractor, that go into the ends of about a 6″ ROUND (not oval) muffler, with exhaust outlets also on each end of the muffler. Right now, there’s 90-… -

Ed,
My thought on those spare tire rack slots was IF there’s room underneath with the extractor/header tubes in there, that I might try to fabricate and install a “fake spare tire mount” that would let me hinge the entire engine lid from there. My engine lid was originally attached with the cheap black rubber clamps like you see on Baja bugs, a… -
