I think the MGA  style would look good.  Mcmaster Carr gives dimensions on an 1157 bulb as 1″ diameter and 2″ overall length.
Based on that number and this photo at MG Magic:
    http://www.mgmagicclassicmotorparts.com/taillight-assembly-complete-replacement-each/
you should be able to get a rough idea on overall size.
On my CMC/ FF fender it appears the MGA style would bolt on with no problem.
Moss Motors sells the entire assembly for $34.95.

Paul does your car use the VW tail Lights  ?

I think the center would dremel out nicely.

Ed I think they are close, but this is what I find listed for MGA
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/MGA-SPRITE-TR3-JAGUAR-MORGAN-REAR-TAIL-LIGHT-NEW-/200889330400?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec5efeae0&vxp=mtr

The lucky style use the same lens as some Triumph Spitfire and GT6.  Profile angle is

Similar , but the base seems to have more of an oval and the lense uses two screws. The complete MGA unit would look good on my CMC and other Kit makes. I think Mg Magic sells complete units that look close to the MGA unit.

    Paul,
I just looked at page 41 in the CMC VW  download manual section and they show how/ what CMC did. Why did I not think to look at such a valuable resource. The sockets have flanges that bolt to the fender, then the base which has no center section mounts over the socket and bolts to the fender. I dont think CMC modified/ cut out base center of Triumph bases, but had a replica base made which was nothing but a beauty ring and mount for the lens.
The CMC Chevette use the same lens, but a different base(original Triumph style) with a single dual filament bulb.

    Triumph Lens/Lucky Replacement

Reflective tape on black rubber lens gasket

Base with two bulbs. If look close at the sockets you can see a strap that ties into the base sides. The fender is relieved for the sockets. I don’t think this is a modified Triumph base, CMC/FF may have has these made for their cars.

My bases look exactly like what you show except they have two bulbs
which  I assume are factory Lucky bases as they show no signs of being
modified. The sockets go straight into the base not slanted or horizontal . MG Magic shows the original Lucky lense in the attached link (looks like the Triumph style), but not the Lucky base. Mine have a base, a gasket between the base and the fender and a gasket between the lense and the base. The fender is relief cut for the sockets extend behind the base as the bulbs are perpendicular.  I am positive these have not been modified. I originally wanted to change my lights out for 52 TD style which some of the replicas came with, but have grown to really like the Triumph style that came on the car.
I think Newkitman (Allen) has a CMC/FF like I have. It would be interesting to find out what tail lights he has. It looks like the Triumph bases you show have a reflector like I replicated with the aluminum tape on mine to throw more light. As a note my old lenses are stamped Lucky.
These style lights use 1 screw at top of lense and a tang at the bottom that fit into the base.

Just wanted to add the Triumph lens link for those that might need them to replace the faded Lucky.
They will have reflector tape in the lower section that needs to be removed as the Triumph had single bulbs instead of the two the lucky has.

    Paul,
the original Lucky lenses and the Triumph are both plastic. The lucky set up uses two bulbs, an 1156 and an 1157. So far there has been no heat problem and I don’t think there will be as the watts go from 26.8 on the 1157 to 28.1 on the 2357, amps2.1 to 2.2 for a gain of 8 candlepower or 25% improvement over original bulb. I  noticed almost as much increase in brightness after I upgraded the bulbs by adding the shiny aluminum tape to line the bases as a reflector.
I have always been a little leery driving my car with tail lights so low to the ground, brake lights not very bright and someone right on my tail trying to figure out what I am driving and not watching my brake or turn signal. I have even been using hand signals with my turn signals and brakes, but heck anyone under 30 may think I am flashing gang signs.

Nice work Roy. I had a chuckle when you listed tools used. It was almost a complete machine shop. I always say there is nothing a good man can’t fix with enough tools.

When I installed the headlight relays in my car I replaced the 6014s with H6024s.

After the relay install I compared brightness between the two by only installing one of each and the H6024s were much better.

I think just the relay install will make a lot of improvement in most cars.

The  stock 6014 is 60/50 watts high/low beam.
The H6024 halogen is 65/35 watts high/low beam

My mistake Paul. I thought it was the 4 outlet EMPI like I had. The Empi muffler does have a pretty good angle to it. Guess I was just lucky I had the clearance. It also seems that the VW CMC/Fiberfabs
have a larger engine cover and rear splash panel than some of the other kits. It gives more engine room, but at the same time lets them look a little less authentic.  In my other post about the snake I wasn’t suggesting anyone tie a black mamba to their car to ward off mice, any garden variety constrictor should do the trick. I have two banks of shop lights in my pole barn and  once a few years back I throw both bank switches and nothing. The rafters are all open and I look up to see there is no wiring running to the lights. I’m like you gotta be kidding me, someone broke in to steal $20.00 worth of 12/2 for the copper? I look at the end of the barn and in the seat of this old wooden rocking chair is a monster sized nest built with twigs,  cedar tree bark and about 20′ of 12/2 wire chewed into about 2′ long pieces and all woven together. I would not have believed this if I had not seen it in person. I tore the nest up and rewired my lights never saw the critter that did this and never had anymore problems. Just one of those weird things that sometimes happens, but it had to be some kind of large rodent. Pack rat maybe? Whatever it was it had no problem climbing into the rafters.

    Paul,
mine fit on the CMC/Fiberfab like it was sent with the original kit. I didnt even have to bend the pipes to tweak them in like I did on the 4 outlet GT style that I had put on my car a few years back. Didn’t you have the EMPI 4 outlet GT on your car? If so the single outlet is identical in exhaust configuration and the single outlet is on the lower right where one of the outlets on the 4 outlet gt style is. Unless there is something other than bigger jugs on the exterior of the 1776, I don’t see why it wouldn’t fit if you once had a 4 outlet on your car.
That mice nest  where you cant see it is a  scary thought. I keep my car in a locked pole barn that I know mice can get in. I always check the fan intake for nests after it has set, but no way could you have found the nest under the tin. Just the other day when I was backing my car out there was a black snake/chicken snake prowling in my pole barn right in front of my car. I imagine it was searching for mice. As long as it doesn’t slither out from under the seat of my car it is welcome to eat all the mice it can find . And yes I am afraid of snakes, but do know they have a purpose and leave the ones that aren’t poisonous alone.

Allen, mine was taken with no cap on. I think you will need to shorten more. Maybe someone else with a CMC/Fiberfab can measure to verify.

    Schu,
im not trying to hijack this thread, but I have the Harbor Freight Mig 151 that is a 220volt welder that will use gas or flux core and it does a decent job with either lincoln or hobart flux core wire. If you are using the Harbor freight wire that came with your welder, toss it and try a name brand wire. I also have a lincoln AC220 amp welder that if you are careful and use a 1/16  6013 rod will do a decent job on thin metal.

    Allen,
I agree the  cmc manual is not much help. It says “as short as possible”. I went out this A.M. and measured mine. With no cap on from top of tank to top of filler neck was 1″. When I needed a new gas cap gasket I ordered a new cap. I swear it was almost 3 times as thick as the OEM cap. It hit the underside of the hood. I had to just get the gasket for my old cap. This may have been something in the original build of the car causing the cap to hit, but there isnt much room between the cap and the hood.

    Allen,

I have the CMC/fiberfab vw kit. It has the pre 68 tank with the shortened filler like you are doing. I am not sure how much they cut away, but when I tried to put a new gas cap on it the hood hit. I had to rob the gasket out of the new cap and put in the old. If they would have cut another 3/8 – 1/2″ off it wouldnt have hurt. Pretty close in there between the filler and hood.

    Thank you Roy.

When I woke up this morning with my usual aching back I had
to admit to myself that this getting old thing wasn???t a whole lot of fun. Aches
and pains aside, I have a great family and a good life. Very happy that you got

Looks great Roy! I am not tired of hearing the details and am glad for you that you found the solution. Even though I do not plan to install wires on mine I have been very interested from the start.
P.S.  I really like the red drums peeking through the wires.Thumbs Up

Laughing here Roy. Didnt mean to jump the gun, but was a little excited for you. Heck if it was old Detroit iron you could throw on some shackles and run G50s on her. Hard to adapt that concept to a VW.

what route did you go to attache the adapters to the drums? We need some photos here. I and I am sure many others have been following this project for awhile. However you worked this out ,I am glad you are reaching your goal.
