Okay. After pulling the spare tire mount and closing the engine cover, it still catches. Performed a good inspection with the engine cover still hung up and found the top right of the inside of the engine cover is catching on the top right of the rear face of the fan shroud. I will have to grind down a little on the engine cover. I’ll take some…[Read more]

I believe the top bolts that hold the spare tire support are hanging on the rear face of the fan shroud. I will take the spare tire support off tomorrow and see how that works. In the library tab, if you go to the VW/CMC manual, page 39 covers the spare tire mount installation. It calls for seven 5/16 x 1-1/4 inch bolts. I believe these 1-1/4…[Read more]

I have an engine cover fitment problem. Engine cover opens from the bottom to top and opens no problem. However, when I close the engine cover it goes about 2/3rd of the way down and then hits the back of the cover. Any suggestions?

Sam. I believe the turn signals don’t get power until the ignition switch is on. In VWs, the wire colors run as follows: red is power “all the time”, black is power with ignition switch on and brown is ground.
It may be the voltage regulator had a wire come loose. Check all connections for security. After that…I’m at a loss.
My .02 cents worth.

According to the Bentley Manual for my 71 Beetle with 4 drum brakes I should have “all cars with four wheel drum brakes have residual pressure valves between the master cylinder outlets and the pressure lines. I’ve never heard of these Residual Pressure Valves. Anyway…Has anyone ever heard of these and does anyone sell these Residual Pressure V…[Read more]

Hard to eat crow but I’m eating it. Problem getting the dizzy shaft out was the tool. It wasn’t sitting in the top of the shaft enough. Took a break and tried again and out it came. Got her all back together and there was no Wveem. That’s because of the TD style muffler. Sounds nice. I’ll give her a good break-in run tomorrow. Sorry about my…[Read more]

Well I’ve been at it for 2 hours and so far I have gotten the distributer shaft up out of the hole 1/8 inch. Need it up 1/2 inch minimum to turn the shaft. Better if I can get it out all the way and inspect it. If I have to pull the engine to fix it……I’M DONE. The whole kit and caboodle gone. This Fiberfab has been messing with me since Ive…[Read more]

Yesterday afternoon I got the final release from the doc on my shoulder replacement with the only restriction not to bench press “more than 100 pounds.” He’s a funny guy! So back to Moneypenny full time now. Pulled the fuel pump and mount yesterday when I got home from the doc. The plan is to use my distributor shaft puller and while rotating the…[Read more]

Even better. Here’s what the manual shows. My offset is in the opposite direction. But I have another manual that says the way I have it is correct.

Thanks Ed. I’ll take a pic when I come back from my doc visit and post it. I’pretty sure I’m off 180 degrees off on the distributor shaft.

Well tried to time the engine today. Something just didn’t look right but everything was connected. Engine just wouldn’t start. So off came the distributor and recheck. The distributor shaft was rubbing the electronic ignition module (Campfire) at the high point. So off with the ignition module and back to the points and condenser. Started to…[Read more]

Dave. Good hearing from you again. Some of our seasoned club veterans may have done that very thing and can expound on it. I have heard of some guys in the VW forums threading a bolt into the starter bushing and pulling the bushing out that way. I’ve never tried it though. I’ll check my John Muir book and see if he mentions any tricks. There’s…[Read more]

Thanks Bill. I guess what I was wondering is will say…a 165R15 tire fit on a 15 x 5.5 and a 15 x 4? As far as I can series it will. Just want to be certain before I go purchasing 5 new tires.

My new rims are 15 x 4, 4-lug 4 x 130 rims. Will that impact what tire I can put on them? I want to install 185R15s all around.

newkitman started the topic Convertible Top Snap Tool Question in the forum General Discussion 8 years, 7 months ago
I have the tool for snapping/unsnapping the convertible top snaps. I am worried that it will scratch the jet coat when I use it. Do you folks who have this tool apply tape to the underside? Also, would this tool be suitable for use on the lift-a-dots snaps?
