  • What you are describing is known as a hanger bolt. Check local hardware stores. I found one on Home Depot with 8/32 machine threads and #8 course threads on the other end
Another option would be to just drill and tap hole where you want. Then screw in a bolt with nut threaded on, tighten the nut then weld bolt and nut. Cut off head of bolt, clean…[Read more]

And may Santa bring you a new timing light with built in dwell and tachometer.

If you have a mechanics stethoscope try puting the probe on each of the gauges in the dash. Or as my grandfather taught me put a screwdriver on each gauge and put the handle to your ear. If the noise is caused by a vibration the noise should be transmitted through the screwdriver to your ear. Use a thin shaft screwdriver as larger ones that…[Read more]

Found a old VW sender part #113919049D that when tested shows a range between 7 (full) and 30 (empty) ohms. There are additional markings on the sender showing 8 80 which may have been the original ohm specs. I replaced the unit because the VDO fuel gauge was still showing half a tank when in fact it was empty. Therefore, using a VDO…[Read more]

Can not answer definitively as I don’t know specs for VW fuel senders. What I would recommend is isolating the three components of the system. One, check continuity of wiring with Muir test light and battery or VOM which is my preference. If wiring to gauge and sender is good, verify you have a good ground/negative wire to sender.…[Read more]

VDO fuel senders use a variable resistor rated from 10 to 180 ohms. If you pick up a potentiometer from Radio Shack with same ohm specs you can use it to test the gauge by connecting the two wires that are currently connected to the fuel gauge sender then adjust the potentiometer to simulate the a full or empty fuel tank. You will have to…[Read more]

  • Watch the video at bottom of the page. They show a 18-24″ tube that is put into the frame and the rubberized material is sprayed in a arc from the nozzle on the end of the flexible tube. Only concern I would have in using product would be rubberizing gear shift mechanism which could hamper operation Could also be a challenge if you ever have to…[Read more]

  • Recent posting on Samba re losing brake fluid with no readily apparent cause for leak or where fluid was leaking reported that master cylinder was leaking into chassis and fluid was pooling in tunnel. Found that when car was accelerating fluid flowed to back of tunnel and leaked out at transmission area giving false impression of transmission…[Read more]

any concerns with changing the symmetry of the fenders and trying to get the profiles identical? Did you consider just cutting and stretching the fender where it is bolted to the body. You could have added spacers between the fender and body to determine how much additional material would be required and given the location if it was not…[Read more]

  • Did you use a oil or water based stain? If water based how long did you let it dry before you applied the poly. As the milky discolouration was localized it probably was not the poly. My suspicion is that there was a moisture issue that caused the problem. You should be able to remove the poly with light sanding then if you have a moisture meter…[Read more]

  • The resistance of 16 AWG is .0132 ohms per metre aka 39″. Heavier gauge wire ie 14 AWG will have a lower resistance per metre

  • Allen
You would have to compare the resistance values between the original VW sender and the new one. If not the same you may get false readings displayed on the new gauge

John, the hand tools that you used can certainly do the job but as Allen was looking for opportunities to buy new tools was providing some recommendations. As I could only buy 1×6 solid rough cut black walnut I had to put the wood through a thickness planer to reduce to 3/4″. Then used a joiner to square the edges and a biscuit cutter to ensure…[Read more]

As you are starting anew would recommend using a drill press for drilling holes for gauges. I had the greatest success using Forstner bits, followed by hole saws using the drill press. Had problems maintaining them perpendicular to the wood using a hand drill. Would not consider using spade bits as they are really only effective for rough cuts.…[Read more]

Two questions, as oak has both an open and closed grain structure will you be using a filler and conditioner prior to staining? I have used filler to provide a glass smooth surface when working with oak. The conditioner will provide an even penetration of stain. Second question, why did you decide to use lacquer as your top coat. I know…[Read more]

I opted for black walnut that I stained and sealed with the Cetol products. One of the few products that is still oil based and is UV resistant. I considered going with vinyl and using contact cement on the front and heating and stretching the vinyl over the edges and stapling the vinyl on the back of the dash. Problem with using the vinyl was on…[Read more]

  • Toller replied to the topic Door Hinges from MG Magic in the forum VW Based Kits 8 years ago

As the hinges are aluminum and the pins are likely steel what you may try after driving out the pins is putting the pins in a set of vice grips to put some longtitudal crimps in the shaft. When you reinsert the pins the grooves/crimps should bite into the aluminum hinge. Another option would be to put a spot weld on the pin shaft. You can then…[Read more]

There is no indication on the MGmagic web site that they offer left or right hinges Can you drive out the pins so has to reinsert so that you can create a left or right side hinge.
If not you can try calling to find out if they offer left and right hinges
