Happy to see that you have taken my musings in the light hearted manner in which they were posted. Expect that a number of members may see themselves in the groups I wrote about. Hope that others see it the way you did, as there was no intention of offending anyone

As to answering Greg’s OP “What is going on” I am getting the box trailer I…[Read more]

I have observed over the last year three areas of interest on the forum. One is the new member who has just bought their car and with a few exceptions undertake a R&R to either fix things that are not working or they want to customize. This group is further broken down into two segments, those that want to do the work themselves and a second one…[Read more]

Given that you have encountered the problems you have from just installing a fuel filter suspect you may already have offended one of gods, probably the one responsible for transportation

With all the expertise available on this forum surprised you will not take a chance at diagnosis and repair yourself. I had not done any auto repairs in over 30 years and paid mechanics big $$ to carry out maintenance and repairs to both my trucks and wife’s cars during that time. Since buying the TDR last year and doing a lot of…[Read more]

Not necessarily, depends on which way the hood (bonnet) opens. On mine the hinges are on the driver side of hood so access to the filler on the passenger side makes sense

Filler is located on back passenger side on my MiGi

You have posted you have a MiGi TD, if you look at the two tanks on the http://www.mamotorworks.com/vw/subcategory/vw-fuel-tanks site for <68 and >69 you will note a difference in the tank configuration. Suspect that MiGi body design was engineered to use a <68 tank so maybe a >69 will not fit in space for tank. I have a MiGi on a 68 chassis…[Read more]

  • John raises a good point about VINs. My TDR was imported to Quebec from NY in 2003 and the MTME (Dept of Transport for those in the US) assigned a VIN NY19168 ignoring the VIN used by VW when the chassis was manufactured. When car was imported from Quebec to Ontario in 2010 the MTO retained the Quebec assigned VIN.

    Nevertheless looking back at…[Read more]

  • No tricks to determining age of chassis or engines provided VIN and engine serial numbers are available
VINs on a TDR can be found near cover/inspection plate that covers the gear shaft coupler between the seats in front of the TDR shelf. The engine serial number is located on engine casing above the pulley and below the generator/alternator

Assuming that nothing else was changed coincident with relocation of fuel filter then I would focus on filter and connections. Verify that hose clamps on fuel lines are tight and that filter is not damaged. If okay, then would remove the filter and reconnect lines to see if problem is eliminated and there was a problem with the filter. Some…[Read more]

If you getting false readings from the fuel sender check the orientation of the float or length of the lever on the float in the gas tank. I found that the float had been installed incorrectly in my 68 VW donor and was giving low fuel readings when the tank was half full. I rotated the sender so the float was pointing towards the front of the…[Read more]

As you have the tank out of the vehicle you will have to assess how extensive the rust is This can be done with a scope inspection camera, light and mirror, tapping outside of the tank where the rust is or poking the tank with an awl to determine extent of rust and whether integrity of tank has been compromised. Have heard of some who have tried…[Read more]

Are you positive that it is rust? Old gas with ethanol will deteriorate and a yellow coloured sand like precipitate will be deposited in the bottom of the tank and clog up fuel lines, pumps and the carb. You have to physically remove the crap, blow out or replace the lines, pump and carb. If you are not sure it is rust, test with magnet. The…[Read more]

I realize that some members can not conceive of ever trailering their TDR but for some of us that are faced with two to three hours travelling on high speed (100 to 120 KPH) highways to get to an event, using a VW towbar while possible is not practical.  I have purchased an enclosed car carrier that will come equipped with E-track.  I have s…[Read more]

  • Scott you will find a wealth of info in the posts and the members invariably have encountered and repaired any issues you may encounter and will offer their advice to correct the problem
To add to Roy’s suggestion would also include Bentley and Haynes manuals for 68 VW. I use cip1.ca or cip1.com if you are in the US as my goto supplier for VW…[Read more]

Maybe they are future recruits for the fraternity, so we have to keep…[Read more]
