    Thank you for this great site. New member having purchased from an auction house here in Ga.  Has spent more time in the shop than with me,  This site is a wealth of information.  As soon as I can get it back I hope to be able to post some pictures and information on it.

    The car was built in Texas. Motor is in the rear and looks like a Duchess. But I do not remember it saying that on the plaque mounted under the hood.  It has the bump at the fender not smooh like the Fiber.

    I am in Atlanta.  Hard to find someone to work on it.

    I found one place that I am using and it came highly rated on internet, but still not sure. I do have a friend that her brother was head of all the service at a large VW Dealership here and hope he might hook me up with a retired mechanic that can work on it.

    Bob,

    VWs are simple cars, but they have a high tinker factor. There is always something that needs tweaking. It will be expensive to pay a mechanic every time the noises change.

    It is cheaper and more fulfilling to maintain it yourself. Find a VW owner’s club and buy a copy of “Volkswagen for the Compleat Idiot” by John Muir from Amazon.

    Besides, you may not find a mechanic who knows all the nuances of the air cooled Vdubs today.

    Don’t let Peter scare you off Bob.

    Learn to adjust your VW’s valves and change the oil every 3,000 miles (or every six months or so if you don’t rack up the miles).

    And buy this How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive 19 Ed: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot

    And ask us all the questions you want!

    By your description, it sounds like a Duchess.

    Post a couple pics and I bet we’ll be able to tell.

    There is also a “features guide” here that describes features of eight different replicas.
