    Hey All,

I may have located a deal on tires. Quick question…did the original TDs come with white walls, wide white walls or black walls? I have seen pictures and actuat TDs sporting all three. I know I could mount the white wall on the inside but if they had wider white walls or no white walls that will help. I’d like to have my TD look as close to original as I can. Thanks.

Allen, Most of the TDs that I remember from the 50s had black wall tires. I’m sure that many owners put white walls on their cars as a ”dress up” item. Back then they were all wide whitewalls, though I have seen some with narrow ones as well.

Look in SunTan Sailer’s photo gallery to see pics of his car with black tires and also with wide whitewalls. It’s up to you, after all it’s your car, but I prefer black.

    Original spec is blackwalls.

I’m give blackwallls a huge thumbs up. But Larry is right.

The TDs had blackwalls, yes, but they were and are so “convertible” the wide whites can look “right.”

What do I mean by “convertible?”

Well, top up, top down, windscreen up, windscreen down, with or without wind wings.

Some had the windshield removed and those little aeroscreens installed. Some of those had the front fenders pulled and replaced by little motorcycle fenders. All this to make them faster and sportier. Put some meatballs on the car and maybe some roll bars and you got a club racer replica. Wide whitewalls won’t look right on that.

On the other hand: put an external horn set on the car, extra fog lights up front, maybe trim the seats in leather. Fine wood on the dash, steering wheel, shift knob, an accessory heater, luggage rack, spare tire cover . . . basically, accessorize with everything that states “slow and classy,” and the wide whites will set it off beautifully.

You forgot the wicker picnic basket on the luggage rack, the plaid blanket and wine cooler behind the seats and the pretty girl wearing a kerchief and sun glasses in the passenger seat.

    TDs accesorize very nicely.

like the pretty girl wearing a kerchief and sun glasses but I don’t think the wife would appreciate that particular accessory. (drat!)

    Paul,

I drove by Hooters the other day, the girls were out having a car wash.  They tried their best to get us to pull in, my pretty accessory next to me thought I had washed the car enough that morning.  Prob right but theres an idea for you when you get your car back.

Montie…the next time that happens….here’s what you say:

“But sweetheart, look at those struggling, impoverished young ladies. They are so poor, they can barely afford clothes! It’s our obligation to help those less fortunate than ourselves. So let’s help them out and get the car washed.”

The windshield doesn’t have the rake for the bikini on wet glass maneuver anyway.

Is there any hope of getting this thread back on topic, or has it “rounded a curve”?

    Hmmm….”curves”

    It’s probably too late!

Allen (newkitman) started it with his questions about blackwalls vs white walls….and even HE drifted off topic with us!

I would like to know what you decided to do Allen.

Going to stay with black walls unless they are more expensive. Some places actually charge MORE for black walls than white walls. If that is in fact the case I’ll mount the wihite wall with the white on the inside.

I think white walls would look good.  I’d like to find good quality, affordable white walls.(And yes, a pun was intended)

    Just one thought Allen…

I’ve seen guys try the “reverse mounted” whitewalls.

It is amazing how MUCH the white sticks out, even tho it’s facing the inside of the car. I highly recommend trying to avoid that approach if you can.

Thanks Paul. I planned on using that only as a last resort. Really want a good set of Michelin black walls.

They use to make a product called “Tire Black” for painting white walls.  I used it back in ’69 and worked great.  It may have just been some type of black paint but stayed on with no bleed through in the 2 years I had the car.  Just another option.
