Hey Chevy/Ford MGTD owners. I see the VW posts stating gas mileage of 30 to 40 mpg. My Chevette powered TD is averaging around 25 mpg. Is that low, high, or average for a front engine TD? Would like feedback to see if my baby is in the ballpark.

WillFebruary 29, 2012 at 11:12 am #249528I wish I could help here. My front engine Chevy 283 V8 is bored out, so gas mileage is probably not the greatest. My gas gauge stays on Full for about 7/8 of the tank full life, then drops like a lead weight to the empty zone. Plus, my odometer is not working, so I have no clue.
February 29, 2012 at 1:37 pm #249529I’m getting less than 25 with a low-po VW. Needs some carb love, I’m sure. Should be around 28-30 then. The guys claiming 40 mpg are rare, but they claim it so much that a Googler might think it’s typical mileage.
The Chevette with a stick ought to do a little better than you’re reporting, I’d guess. The original car was rated at a combined 27, but it weighed a bit more than the TD.

February 29, 2012 at 1:59 pm #249530My Chevette based BCW has a two barrel progressive linkage carb. About 24 is the best I’ve got . I don’t really drive for the best milage and do a lot of gearing down just having fun!!!It has a 4 speed manual trans.

Ed, re your lo-pow VW mileage: I was getting about 25mpg on MiGi but, my mileage improved significantly after I took out the 009 distributor and installed the factory SVA distributor. I decided to rebuild the engine before I got an accurate # but it was a very easily noticeable real improvement (I am familiar with how many miles I used to get before my gas gauge read 1/4). Not to mention that it runs better with no ne of the infamous “009 hesitation”. (Both distributors were timed “spot on” with carbs adjusted although I did have a vacuum leak for both distributors).February 29, 2012 at 4:32 pm #249532Thanks, Roy. I’ve got a Vac disty & Pertronix. My car idles high since I got it and I’ve been too lazy to attack that little glitch. Probably that’s most of my problem right there.
With gas coming on over $4 I’ll neglect it no longer.

February 29, 2012 at 7:00 pm #249534I guess we are all about the same 26.1 MPG the last time i did it on a nice 50 mile +/- trip mostly level with no red lights in mostly 4th. mine has a 1.4 with a Canadian manifold and progressive Holly carburetor 2bbl. mechanical secondary it has a strong pull in 4th. with 410 rear axel. 2nd. to third could use a ratio between them I guess that is why GM went to a 5 speed the Vauxhall had a 5speed from the begining . I realy don’t mind the milage and enioy all the looks I know all thums up are not for me but for Dixie Cup 75 last week and my BANNA SPLIT was GOOD Dan

He claims it will do low 9’s 1/4 mile and about top speed 180. Wonder what kinda milage he gets. I’m lookin to make mine a little quicker, I think this would be over kill.

People keep telling me to throw a turbo on mine, but the current balance of power and weight is quite adequate for what I use it for. (I will confess I have told a local garage that if they ever scrap the Scorpio behind their shop to let me know.)Bill Ascheman

March 5, 2012 at 10:35 am #249551You don’t see all that many dirt track Chevette;s 25 /30 years ago there were alot you could have bought that intake and carb. setup from Chevy and Pontiac racing parts ,,high revving engine setup . makes me see just how old I AM…BUT WOW IT LOOKS GREAT do you have the headers? there were a set of mandrel bent tube headers that were available back then.
