I am thinking of raising the height of my windshield 6 inches. I would order a new frame and custom glass. My issues are the top of the windshield is even with my eyes, and my head hits the bow when the top is on her. both would be helped by making the wind shield taller. any guidance?

Just be aware that a 6″ taller windshield will significantly increase the wind resistance (ie. force) against the windshield at highway speeds.  You may need to reinforce the mounting area and use more bolts/screws to hold the windshield — especially since most of these kits do not have the “upside-down T” bracket that the original folding windshield has at the bottom, just the vertical frame.

Also you’d have to have custom side curtains made, and likely a custom convertible top.

As an alternative, could you lower your seat and gain the needed headroom?

    I agree with Kent’s comments.

Your roof and side curtains will not fit. I’m not sure you could “order a new frame” from a place like MG Magic. More likely you will have to have a frame custom made.

And while safety and comfort are paramount, I hope you give some slight consideration to esthetics. Just my totally subjective opinion which I should probably keep to myself, but I find it hard to imagine a TD with a six inch taller windscreen.

Maybe add a couple visors on the top of the frame like Schu has done?

If you own a TDr and are not in the Registry, please go to https://tdreplica.com/forums/topic/mg-td-replica-registry/ and register (you need to copy and paste the link)

I’d mock it up and see how it looks first, for sure.

Then, after deciding how it looks with six inches more windscreen, lower your seat.

My kit came with a fiberglass pedestal upon which to mount a seat. The pedestal is about 6 ” tall and the seat would be another 4 inches. That’s 10 inches or so. I had access to a real 1953 TD last week and measured seat height. Seat bottom is 7 inches tall in front and 4 inches in rear (or about 5 inches tall where your butt sits). The seat sits on a low profile adjuster that’s less than 1 inch. In other words, you are probably sitting 4-5 inches higher in your replica than you would be in an MG TD. I’d consider lower the seat before I would raise the windshield.

I think lowering seat would be a better and cheaper option to raising the windshield. It also would be easier to change back if needed.

Lowering seat platform is as easy as removing it and making base. Someone on forum here has lowered there seats and pictures are here somewere.

You could also consider doing the seat fix I posted someplace on this site – lowered my sitting high about 3-4″and much more comfortable ( No more DBS )

My seat base now rests on a 2″ piece of angle instead of the 6″ fiberglass box. The windshield header was directly in my line of vision and I felt like Dino Flintstone when the top was up. The seating position is now quite comfortable. Also, consider changing the position of the seat back.
