Because of the way VW based TDr engine covers open and close, reproduction TD luggage racks don’t work well.
I found this picture, with a rack that looks very easy to replicate. The spare on my Duchess mounts with only two bolts. But that’s an easy modification to make to this style.PMOSSBERG 2015-05-07 13:27:29 Paul Mossberg

Got my luggage rack and suitcase on OK!BillBad Bill
May 6, 2015 at 6:32 pm #264378Hope I get to see a “real thing” (thinking Coca-Cola) MG someday, like that one, Paul. That’s definitely an improvement if the car already has spare wheel bars like that one does. Less cluttered look, minimalist of sorts.
I’ve got to get me luggage for my rack, too, like that on Rosebud! Very nice look you have there.May 6, 2015 at 7:53 pm #264379Bill,
Hard to tell from the pic, but what is your rack attached to?
It does not appear to attach like an original fold down rack, which had brackets bolted to the car, and to the bumper mounts (where they would get in the way of an opening engine cover), nor an original style top rack (which sat above the fuel tank).

May 6, 2015 at 9:16 pm #264380Paul,
It’s not a fold down type, it has 4 bolts mounting it to the faux fiberglass tire cover. Shot from the other side.BillBad Bill
May 6, 2015 at 10:44 pm #264381Rosebud and Bill wrote:faux fiberglass tire coverGets point for neatness. I figured that it mounted to the spare mount somehow. Are you saying the spare cover is actually fiberglass and made to look like a fabric cover?! Or am I misunderstanding and you meant the part underneath the wheel… which is more likely to me.May 7, 2015 at 12:30 am #264382Bob,
It is a fiberglass shell to look like a cover over a tire, but in fact it is just empty space inside. Then there is a vinyl cover on top of the fiberglass shell.

May 7, 2015 at 12:53 am #264383Thanks for that answer, Bill! Never would have guessed that.
Must be a quite a weight reduction that way. I’ve been purposefully loading the front end of my VW-based car to try and balance it out. Couldn’t recall if yours is also VW or not.May 7, 2015 at 1:14 pm #264384Thanks Bill.
So your rack bolts to the “faux spare,” pretty much like the rack I found bolts to a real spare. When I wrote about “original style” luggage racks, these are the two I was referring to. Neither will work on a VW powered TDr, where the “gas tank” is actually a moveable or removeable engine cover.PMOSSBERG2015-05-08 22:45:48

I like that 2d one that folds down, too bad it won’t work on a VW TDr.BillBad Bill
May 8, 2015 at 9:17 am #264386Hello guys,
I moved the suspension conversation to the MGTD Kit car suspension thread.PMOSSBERG2015-05-08 13:23:37

May 8, 2015 at 1:24 pm #264387There was a previous conversation about luggage racks here. But that thread also includes a discussion on sway bars.

May 8, 2015 at 10:45 pm #264388In April of 2013 Dale (schu) wrote the following in the thread I linked in my previous post:
“Paul, Thanks for that link on the different type of racks
– I think I may try the wood type – I have left over Mahogany from a
project that will work if sealed well – no cost to me other then labor. “Well, apparently Dale followed through on that project. Yesterday he asked me to post pictures of his homemade wooden luggage rack.
So…here they are:

May 9, 2015 at 12:10 am #264390That’s a good look for these cars, especially considering wood dash and steering wheel if you have them.
😀Like the fold-up design too.Not fond of the metal racks. I was considering buying a 1974 Corvette last Fall and it had a luggage rack I really didn’t like at all.May 9, 2015 at 9:41 am #264391LHR – I’m totally with you on the Vette! Those racks bolted to the fiberglass always look like they came straight out of JC Whitney!

May 9, 2015 at 2:59 pm #264393Thanks for posting for me Paul ( never quite got the hang of it ).
Thanks for the kind comments on the rack. It looks nice with the wood dash in the background. In hindsight I would make it a little smaller but works well. Easy to install and remove. Bolted in the wheel nuts of the spare.May 10, 2015 at 7:34 am #264394Looks good, Dale.
