Picking one up tomorrow. Owner says it says Alli on title. I would think it was made by Allison out of Florida. Wonder if upholstery, top etc available for this. I have heard that some OEM MG trim like door latches etc. was used on this car. Right or wrong? It’s going to take a while to get it back on road.

Yes. Like many of the manufacturers, Allison used a number of reproduction pieces.
Take a read through the manufacturer comparison that our members have created:

Where is the vin? I have never fooled with vw’s but other old cars had vin or serial # somewhere on frame in addition to body. If there is one on frame from when it was built as a vw, would they have used that #? If not would it be ground off or just dismissed?
LeoAugust 22, 2015 at 4:51 pm #265355If they used the VW VIN, it is stamped into the center tube of the chassis, right above the access panel for the shift rod to Transmission connection. In other words, under the seat!

That would be entirely up to the builder.
For example, I cut the VIN plate off the dash of my donor VW and riveted it to the front side of the “firewall.”
What did other builders do? No idea. It is just as likely you will find no VIN plate at all.

August 23, 2015 at 11:44 pm #265362The Lafer factory riveted the VIN plate to the firewall, just below and in front of the dash wiring.
