    Looking at the VW fan shroud from the rear, at about 2 o’clock, there is often a short stub pipe (about 1/2″ dia), right on the outer edge of the shroud. 

    I have never seen one hooked up to anything and have not found it in my books. 

    I give up.  Whatzit?

    Roy. A hose connects that tube to either the air cleaner housing or the emission canister. Part of the ole smog system.

    Thanks Allen, but how would a hose that takes fresh air from the fan, help with emissions?

    I believe it pushes fresh air through the charcoal canister and then exits it back into the air cleaner.
