I have a VW based FF TD with fifteen inch tires.  I have the tires inflated to 32 pounds all the way around.  The car rides hard like the tires are very hard.  I am not sure of the weight of the car, but since it is fiberglass and should be lighter than it was as a VW sedan, I was wondering if I could reduce the pressure to obtain a smoother ride.  I know low or very low pressure can ruin the tires and adversely affect the handling of the car. I have only had this car for a few months, so I am asking those of you that have had the TD’s for a good while, what would be the recommended tire pressure…good for the tires and at the same time, good for a smoother ride. Thanks !!!

Use 15-18 PSI in the front, and 24-26 in the rear. May take a bit of experimenting on your part.

    Ditto!

Here are the official numbers for a VW Type 1:

Bias ply (with 1-2 persons) –

    • Front – 16 psi (17 psi fully loaded; 18 psi after
      Jan. 1973)
    • Rear – 24 psi (26 psi fully loaded; 29 psi after
      Jan. 1973)

    Radial –

    • Front – 18 psi (both with 1-2 persons and fully
      loaded)
    • Rear – 27 psi (both with 1-2 persons and fully
loaded; 29 psi after Jan. 1973)

A VW Beetle weighed about 1850 pounds. Surprisingly, about the
same as most TDr???s. So the original tire pressure spec is a good place to
    start!

    @sabreur76

I’m running 18 psi front – 24 psi rear and it’s been working really well.

Go up a bit for autoX. Like, 22 in front & 28 rear. Otherwise lower.

After I bought new tires the knuckleheads at the tire shop pumped like 35 lbs in all 4 of em. Thought my teeth were gonna shake out on the ride home.
