Dick: Bill is a substantial person. I’d say his car without his fat ass in it will scale at about 2170,* wet & appointed. His is a Ford 2.3 which weighs about 30 pounds less than a Chevette 1.6, according to this guy. That means that, everything being equal (which it almost certainly isn’t**) your Chevette-based car should finish up in the…[Read more]

Greg, Yours is Ford/Chevy/VW based? I always thought the VW based would be at least 200-300lbs less – anyone know?

g,
Being that your kit is a CMC who bought Fiberfab, the kit has (or had at one time) scribe lines on the parts. I have three scribe lines on my front hood. The scribe lines are where you are supposed to cut the body parts to fit. Check out your parts and see if you don’t have the scribe lines. Also what might be helpfull would be to use the… -

Planning to attend Carlisle..Engine: Presently planning to use a 60 degree V6: Ford 2.8, 2.9 or 4.0 fit this and so does the Chevy 2.8/3.4. The choice of engine can be delayed for a while. I will definitely use a stock Mustang II front and rear suspension, already bought and stripped a donor car for those parts.

I’ve never seen a VW based TD that had the outer channels in place. They either run the heat tubes from the heater boxes directly under the seats, or into the center channel as Ed described. Frankly I prefer under the seats. Short run from boxes to interior (about a foot). And those short tubes are insulated. It would seem that you lose a lot of…[Read more]

Not silly at all Allen! These little cars are fun to drive. But I really enjoyed my build, way back in the early eighties. My dad, not so much, since I occupied his one car garage for nine months while his car sat outside! Completing the car was great…but I still felt a bit melancholy that the work was done.

I look forward to following your build too! For what it’s worth, Classic Roadsters Ltd. agreed with you! Other than front and rear sub-frames supporting the body, there is no steel in the body, under the cowl or anywhere else.So your plan seems sound to me!

Funny…people tell you to stay away from the “chain stores” if you need something special. Well…This past summer, a backfire blew out the muffler on my 1965 Plymouth Satellite. ALL my classic Mopar friends said I needed a custom shop. But I knew of none near me. I found the period correct replacement muffler on eBay. When it arrived, I headed…[Read more]

Heat in Bridget is ducted through the center tunnel. The build book says send out through the outer channels though. There apparently are several ways to do it.

Well back to work on the chassis now that I have the correct rear inner bearings. Got the right rear assembled today after work. I stripped and painted the brake backing plates and have new everything else. Once assembled and without the brake shoes installed, when I spin the rear drum I’m getting a rub somewhere. I think the backing plate is…[Read more]

Do these TDs use heater channels? Well…not the actual VW heater channel that runs through the base of the body. VW based kits use the heat from the heat exchanger and duct it through the seat bases and out the front of the seat base. That’s if the use heat at all. Some folks in the hotter climates don’t use heat.
