MGLR didn’t you already have doghouse cooling? (I am having some difficulty finding old posts due to my advancing years.) If you did not, then you need to get a larger fan and an offset bracket for the oil cooler.

I picked up a dog house housing for my current rebuild. I feel it is much better than the old one that was on there.

TO: MGLondon, sure you can come by sometime I am free most days. You better be carefull with an 1800cc VW! I had a ’63 VW when I was in Germany and it was fast with only 1200cc. They used to sell an auxillary cooling unit for bored out VW dune buggys because the cylinder walls get thin and heat up like an old pontiac.
TO Ringo: I will try to…[Read more]

Quoting Royal in an earlier post:
Do you mean the two piece tin that goes between the engine case and the heater boxes? If so, I think that this one causes the fan forced cooling air to wrap around the bottom of the cylinders and the push rod tubes and prevents hot spots on the bottom of them as well as protecting the push rod tubes. “Quote: It has to do with separating the airflow from the hot areas at the bottom of the engine and the cooler air coming into the fan intake.”
I wish I had cooler air in the Phoenix summer! 115F might not be cool enough to run the VW engine in July or August. That sounds like the perfect excuse to head to the pine country or maybe San Di… -

“Cool!”
Greg, I realize that you live in NY and probably wonder why this is important. I lived there (NY) long enough to know that the asphalt roads get super hot in the summer and that reflects right up onto the engine. Cheap insurance.

I’m working with my mechanic who is rebuilding my engine and he will be custom fabricating some metal sheeting to go between the muffler and the engine to keep heat out.

I like it a lot. I often post something expecting a reply and when I do not get one, am wondering if he did not see it. Now I know that he did, and had nothing to say. Helpful. Thanks Frankie. Everthing looks great except the photo gallery which I relied upon heavily to figure out how something goes or at least how someone else did it.

Rocky,
My car is pretty close to Royal’s. But I think my wheel sits a bit closer.Something else to point out….you need a flat steering wheel with zero dish! Just like the one on Roy’s picture.PMOSSBERG2012-02-23 09:16:21

The front end on my FiberFab is a Chevette and I was told that the shop could not do an alignment. I haven’t taken it anywhere else yet, but that was disappointing news.

Welcome. I’m also in central AZ, living in Phoenix, so we aren’t too far apart. My VW engine is coming together nicely, but still not mounted into the vehicle yet. I’m down your way often, or almost that far south, so if you’re open to visitors, I can stop by to see your treasure toy.

I’m also pretty sure we’re all going through a learning curve that will be worth it when everything settles down. Change is always difficult at first.Again, many thanks! -
