Rocky,
Here is a link to the assembly manual in the Download Manuals section at the left. Page 77 – 79 of the manual covers how to repair and paint the Jelcoat surface. I would imagine that the procedure is the same for a full paint after repair. Its the process I’m going to use on a crack by the engine cover on the body of my TD just as soon as…[Read more] -

Rockyx Hope this helps. Found it on line.
Surface prep is very important. Paint will not stick to oily or greasy surfaces. The oil from your hands is enough to prevent adhesion. So a clean surface is vital. Also, if the surface is too rough or has gouges in it those blemishes will show right through the paint.
Paint will not adhere well to…[Read more] -

I too am no expert on fiberglass. But, I have owned a number of boats. That is where I would go, – ask a reputable boat guy. Awlgrip is a popular boat paint that I have used.

Sorry I’m not an expert. However you are going to have to break the glaze of the gelcoat for anything to stick.I have not reaserch but I would think the gelcoat is very similar to the clearcoat on cars today, just thicker.
Give it try with some 400 and see if paint sticks.Rattle can is not the best solution, generally a good primer needs a 400 grit…[Read more] -

Late to the party, but I have a good excuse. Just got back from celebrating our 40th anniversary. I’m about a month away from turning 63, and my bride is . . . younger.

Matte black; use high heat paint made for manifolds.

Royal replied to the topic screw in spring spacers in the forum General Discussion 13 years, 7 months ago
I did many years ago and removed them because they distort the shape of the coils. I was afraid that they caused a weakness at the point where inserted. Didn’t like them because I was afraid that the spring might break when going across a pot hole or carrying a heavy load.. …just my opinion.

New question on my “new” heads. They are lightly painted different colors.
Q: Does it matter? Since a head is hardly visible with all the tin around it, it seems that it might only be important if heat transfer is in question. The outsides (fins etc) of theese heads are lightly sprayed: one white, one silver. Should I get some paint remove…[Read more] -

The motor is set back a bit with spacers while I figure out how much (or if) to cut the shaft. Originally thought I could snug it up under the top lip of the windshield, but that looks unlikely now. Still, it’s pretty close to the original’s size, and will look more compact when I’m done.

I have both, and enjoy both! The Ford engined version feels more substantial, rides better and is more pleasant to drive long distances. The Vw is zippier (not faster), gives you more of a 50’s feeling and has more storage and footroom. They BOTH ride better, handle better, squeek and rattle less and are faster. The Vw is easier, if not a li…[Read more]

They should work better to clear off the windshield, coming from above rather than below. Looks good. It would be real nice to find a smaller wiper motor that didn’t protrude so much into the car.

Haven’t had the pleasure of driving a VW TD, but Iv’e had 4 VWs in the past. I can say that I did not look for a VW powered TD when I bought the Duchess. Kinda’ a been there, done that thing. But I will say that to me the Ford engine is a lot more forgiving than the VW since you don’t have to keep the RPMs up to make her happy and the low end…[Read more]

Original TDs have it routed inside the windshield frame. They also only use two wires, as the controls are on the wiper motor. I’ll need three 16-gauge wires at least (more likely 14s). They may fit inside the frame. If not I’ll route them outside and glue a piece of aluminum angle over them with silicone caulk.
