I started using Brad Penn racing oil last year. It is a partial synthetic. I noticed a slight oil temperature drop over the castrol. I will stick with the Brad Penn even though I have to buy it online.

Hey this make sense Roy. The warm oil runs through a defroster coil where a fan blows air over the coil to defrost the glass, but with all the oil in the defroster coil it cause oil pressure to drop in the engine! The only thing that puzzles me is the 3 gallons of gas it takes to run the defroster motor. Terrible milage indeed.
Just kidding with…[Read more] -

according to my stock VW friends. The oil they use is a ZDDP oil that is high in Zinc because of the flat tappets. They recommended Brad Penn Racing oil. I went on ebay and bought mine. You can get multi viscosity or straight weight. Depends on where you live as to what weight oil you need.

Dude, that is very cool. Pretty sure I have the same problem–bypass screw is seated. Like I said, it came to me that way, is running nice otherwise (though def. rich), and so I’ve been OK leaving well enough alone. But getting like 24 mpg & think I should be closer to 30. look forward to getting this right in the spring. Thanks for showing the way.

edward ericson replied to the topic EMPI 3487 Exhaust in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 3 months ago
Ditto on that, Mark. The 3487 is not a performance exhaust; it seems to be comparable to the stock VW exhaust in terms of back pressure. Deepens the sound just a smidge. The real benefit is it tucks up clean and leaves the right size single exhaust tip exiting under the passenger side bumper in the exact spot it’s supposed to on an MGTD. That’s…[Read more]

Ed, With the 009 my idle was running about 1200 which didn’t really bother me since it is a centrifugal distributor. But with the 035, the vacuum advance starts to pull in at about 1200 rpm with a normal engine. So, I followed this as close to the letter as I could: http://www.vw-resource.com/tune-up.html#problem
It turns out that even with my…[Read more] -

You can re-use the screen if you clean it (I shot some starter fluid on it last time), but you maybe still need to buy the gasket kit with the little brass/copper washers & stuff, and a new screen comes with.Or I guess you could use form-a-gasket and save $8 on the kit . . .I cleaned my screen because the new one looked like a wider mesh, and I…[Read more]

Roy, what, exactly, did you do to get your idle right? Mine’s been high (1300rpm or so, at best) since I bought it, and I’m fixing to tackle it this season. And what’s your static and 2500 RPM timing now?

MGLondon – which exhaust do you have. Send us a picture. The 3487 certainly “looks” the closest to a TD (that was important to me) and it soulds a little more throaty with less wheezing than the stock VW. Only slightly louder than a stock VW muffler. The Dual Ghia exhaust was a bit too much muscle car look for me.

I don’t know anything about this this exhaust. Are there benefits to it vs. the twin exhaust I have now?

I’m starting to think the only place we can find the non-logo hub caps, either nipple style or flat is at a VW show/swap meet. And like any of those, sometimes you score and other times the person selling wants a fortune. 1st show of the season here in the southeast is Mar. 11.
