Ed, Re the nubby thing: I’ll check out the cam before installing it. Do you, or anybody else have any suggestions as to whether I need to prime the pump before starting? I uised to use STP a lot on rebuilds that I did and I was planning on “packing” the pump and gears with STP before mounting, but there is probably a better way.

Mike, Very likely you are right,- an owner choice thing. I am new (again) to VW’s having owned 2 about 40 years ago. So, whatever I say is probably something that I have recently read or something that I thought I knew that I learned on my other autos. I read a lot and tend to over study things which often means that I over worry about stu…[Read more]

Royal I have read the exact same thing about the air flow through the heater boxes helps to keep the area cool over the valve cover . I dont disagree, but my heater boxes are not hooked up to my fan and when i pointed my infrared thermometer at them they were much cooler than the surrounding bare exhaust. I do know when you run J pipes instead o…[Read more]

I’d have a look at the part that engages with that nubby thing. I believe that’s the camshaft in this case?

I plan on towing MiGi up to Carlisle this year and back. That’s about 900 miles (round trip). I’ll be towing with my 2wd Mercury Mariner mid sized SUV. I bought my tow bar before I had even seen, let alone bought MiGi. Towed her home, never even considered driving it, but could have (300 miles).

The answer to my own question after further investigation is that closing off the heat with the floor levers does not stop the air from flowing through the heat exchanger boxes. They vent to the atmosphere when the heat in the car is off. I read that this is because the heat exchangers in the stock muffler setup are part of the cooling system a…[Read more]

The cabin heater hoses were not hooked up on my London Roadster when I bought her. With the engine being rebuilt, I hope to hook up new hoses for our chilly winter mornings. In this desert, we really are in a land of extremes. It can drop into the 30’s or below at night in the winter, and climb above 115 F in the summer.
I certainly don’t need h…[Read more] -

I’ve used mine twice to no foul effect. No ring left by either usage. I had rather short trips, about 20 miles each direction and back. I towed the London Roadster with my Honda Oddyssey. I’m sure the rear lights were on the van were visible, but I wanted the extra lighting at the end of the car I was towing. I also used tow chains, so tha…[Read more]

Guess that I should have mentioned that the spec for gear to case (as mentioned in the article linked above) is .003 and the backlash is .004.

My new pump arrived this afternoon. Had a heck of a time getting the pulley off the crankshaft. Had to borrow a special VW puller and it came off in less than 60 seconds. The new Schadek is 26mm gears and the old pump was 21mm. The gear to housing clearances on both pumps was the same at .003. The old pump backlash was .010 but the new pump…[Read more]

The rear lights on either of my tow vehicles are quite visible over and around the TD, and I don’t bother with extra lights for a short trip. But those of a car towing it would probably be blocked, and you would definitely need some lights on the TD for a long trip (just for the LEO’s following you). How much do those suction cup lights mar up the…[Read more]

I am puzzled, too. I didn’t buy from this company, but my product looks similar. Have you tried calling the phone number? Maybe you have to register first. To get the magnet lights to work, you would have to mount a steel plate under the surface you wanted to mount the lights. The suctions cups hold tight and worked great. Just be sure you hav…[Read more]

MGLR….thanks for the link to the suction cup lights! The magnet ones are easy to find, but for some reason, they don’t stay on the fiberglass!
But…there is no “click to buy” link. Any idea why?

You will also need those brake lights hooked up to your 4X4. I use a suction cup mounted light kit like this one. It holds tight to the rear fenders and works great.http://www.motorcityreman.com/hdsc30b.html

I bought one of those very soon after I got my car and left it in the back of my Saturn Vue for a while – my car kept crapping out after 5-10 miles of driving until I sorted out my problem by replacing the coil. I had to call my SO to come and get me so I could tow the car home. It takes less than 5 min to hook it up to the front axle/lower…[Read more]

Greg, see my post above. Attaching the tow bar and towing simply can not get any easier than with a VW beetle chassis.

Thanks for all your input. One more thought, with my car being a rear engine and this may be a dumb question is the tow bar attached to the front of the car and does anything else have to be done when towing?
