“Car Show” on Speed TV tonight (8/17) ran a segment on this year’s Pebble Beach. The camera showed classic cars parked on the street in the intro. Ferrari, GT40, Maserati, MG TD. Tan with brown fenders and a faun interior. But wait a minute. The wipers were on the cowl. The hood was hinged on the left side at the top. It was a TD replica in a line…[Read more]

Mine are installed — good thing too because within 6 weeks of putting it on the road a lady backed into me and only bent the bumper support bracket. I am sure that that light bump would have put a dent in that brand new 25 year old bumper if the back bar was not installed.

The TD kits are now rare, compared to the Speedsters and Cobras especially. When I cruise the local circuit there’s usually at least 5 Cobras on the lot. There’s never been another TD. Bridget gets a lot of admiring looks and I’ve yet to have anyone diss her–not within my earshot, anyway. Cheap? You becha! Probably one of the five or 10 least…[Read more]

Just out of curiosity, how many folks have the bumper back bar installed on their cars.

Paul, I’ll let you move this to the thread on insurance. I couldn’t find the one we were using.
I went to my insurance agent last week to get some clarification on my coverage. State Farm does have a antique/classic car policy. I must have stired up something at their home office too. Today I just got a updated letter, policy and decla…[Read more] -

Tom, I’ve wondered the same thing. Maybe ours are so looked down on because of the price. It’s hard to find any Speedster for less than 10 to 15000 and Cobras well maybe 25000 pluss. Not sure how the rest are approched, but not a day goes by when I out in Audrey that I get

or at least a
from everyone. I can’t think of many other cars th…[Read more] -

Sadly, that’s not completely true for all of us.
Obviously the VW drivetrain stuff is readily available. And there are many vendors for reproduciotn TD parts.
But while MG Magic has parts that are universal, much of their stock is for CMC/Fiberfab. For example, major body panels, roofs, side curtains are not shared across manufacturers. MG Magic m…[Read more] -

Great article. I love it when the writer shows what real work looks like, and the subject of the story doesn’t sugar-coat it. Things really do take near forever–and that’s when a pro who knows what he’s doing is involved. You put a dilettante like me on the job & no telling how long it will take or what it will look like when it’s done.

Quite a few of the Speedster guys can’t tell a 3/8 socket wrench from a ball peen hammer. And a fair number of them are proud of this fact. They “buy the best” from Intermeccanica or some other builder and get a fully-assembled, and often well-sorted, brand new car from the mfg. Plus dealer-like maintenance–to the degree that’s possible given…[Read more]

It’d be cool if someone could make a template and post it here. Some enterprising individual could fabricate some of their own. And a rubber gasket would be simple enough to cut.

I’m glad the parts business for our cars hasn’t gone the way of the kit car manufacturers. They’re hard enough to get parts for as it is. That’s why I order what I need way ahead of time so I’ll have it when I get to that part of the assembly. newkitman40772.6331828704

This is interesting stuff, Paul. Seems like part of the “fun” of the replicar hobby is keeping tabs on the manufacturers, their bankruptcies and other foibles. Tough business, looks like. Reminds me of the night club trade though, in that the same names of owners often stay around much longer than their trade or corporate names.

And here is Great Lakes Replicas’ site from mid-20006, when they were the authorized dealer in Michigan for CR II:

My Lafer is insured with Hagerty, too — also for $10K. That includes a slick quarterly magazine on collector cars, as well.

Ah yes…that debate has raged for years.
I LOVE asking street rod owners if their fiberglass bodied rod came from a kit. Inevitably the answer is NO. It’s a fiberglass body, but it’s not a kit.
I take a slightly different approach Tom. I tell people it’s a replica of a ’52 TD, built from a kit manufactured by Classic Roadsters in 1982.
I’m proud…[Read more] - Load More
