And Mr. Lafer ALWAYS insisted he did not create an MG TD replica.
Sure looks like one to me tho. -

I still cannot find the stock “nipple” hubcaps without VW or Empi logos. 🙁 -

Those are VW wheels and VW hubcaps (with no center logo).
The wheels are painted in the correct MG TD silver, available from Eastwood. The description talsk about wire wheels, but this is the correct silver for the steel wheels:

Can’t even tell you how I foudn it. I think I had googled MG TD images, trying to find good photos of original MG TD wheels.
Let’s just say the orange TD sort of stood out on the image search results page!

Also, a comment on the IRS comments posted by BDriver and GunFighter.
Everything you guys said is correct. Technically the old VW swing axle suspensions are “independent” because the rear wheels move independently of each other.
But…and this is a big but…
In air-cooled VW circles, IRS will always mean the non-swing axle suspension. So if you…[Read more] -

Best I can tell, c6024 MAY be an out of production Gabriel Gas Ryder shock absorber.
There has been lots of debate here as to the best shocks for our VW based TD replicas. And the common wisdom is standard oem equivalent oil-filled shocks.
Here is the thread with the most comprehensive VW suspension discussion on our forum:

Wow. Very pretty. I like the wheels too.
Are those VW hubcaps?
Where did you find the MG logos?
How did you attach them?
Who’s to say that original TD wheels don’t really have oval vents? They appear oval when you look at them from any angle but straight on to one hole at a time.
What do the front engine cars do for replica stock steel wheels?

Got the car up on the lift yesterday and to my suprise, it has coil springs on the rear with a chock in the middle. So now I have to find just a standard shock, not a coilover. The front has a coilover shock.
The code on the shock was C6024 which I am having a hard time finding out what it is. Got to match it to something as one shock is broke.…[Read more] -

My understanding regarding the “MP” is that it comes from name the
company which made these cars in Brazil:M?veis Patenteados Lafer S/A hence “MP Lafer”
(which translates to Lafer Patented Furniture)
The lafers were made by Mr. Percival Lafer from Brazil whom after taking
over the family furniture business decided to venture into the au…[Read more] -

Here’s a thought.
1. A flat chrome hubcap that would fit a VW wheel.
2. An MG logo that could be applied to the hubcap.
Faux original steel MG wheels for a fraction of the cost of wires.
We are talking about replicas of original cars.
Why not replicas of original wheels?

BDriver is right about TDs having steel rims as stock…except that the original TD had multiple round holes around the rim. They look oval, but that is because of the perspective and the curvature of the wheel itself. http://www.simoncars.co.uk/mg/slides/w_MG%20TD%20Midget%2019 51%20wheel.jpgI wish they were oval. Stock VW rims would look more original 😉

Thanks Guys
The engine is a 2.3L Pinto with exhaust from the original builder York Sports of Ashland Va.
I enjoy the Automatic, with the tight cockpit I can’t imagine how the 4 speed folks can work the clutch.
They saw wife and I at local cruise in and made me an offer my ego couldn’t refuse.
