Thanks for the info. Sounds like a car that needs a bit of work, hope it goes to an owner with intentions of tender loving care.

I just did the gas gauge on Bridget. Removed the old Classic Instruments gauge–which never read full–and replaced it with the in-speedo gauge from a ’72 Bug.Turned out the used speedo I got had a bad vibrator too, and the sending unit for the CI gauge was no good for the stock VW gauge. So I followed these troubleshooting tips (same, really, as…[Read more]

Heard of it. They made ’em for the MG too; they’re rare and expensive now.I suspect there is a reason you don’t see a lot of blowers on these cars today, and I suspect the reason has to do with heat and parts failures. But this is only a suspicion, and not based on any VW knowledge.I would love to see one of our members set one up and run it. I’d…[Read more]

You will find Dawn dishwashing detergent in most glider pilots’ wash buckets. It strips oil well. That’s important when you are trying to clean bugs from leading edges. It also leaves the gelcoat with a silky feel. -

Stick with Carnuba wax. Miracle waxes with “polymers” on the label use silicons to achieve that wet look on clear coat. It works on fiberglass cars too, but it penetrates the gelcoat and migrates into and through the fiberglass underneath. Any repair to the fibrglass requires powerful solvents to strip the silicon out of the glass long enoug…[Read more] -

If you have one of those spray ends that has different choices use the one labeled (flat spray) and that way it is easy to spray down w/o getting the
inside wet. I don’t even have a top and clean mine all the time in this
manner. -

It would work with the guage.
My only question is, will it work with your custom tank? If the VDO sending unit is like the stock VW, you may still have a problem.
That is why I went to a generic sending unit, that I could cut to the exact dimension needed for my tank.PMOSSBERG40710.6670023148 -

All of my other gauges in the car are VDO. Only the fuel gauge is not identified, but it looks like it belongs with the set. Short of pulling it out, is there any way to tell what make it is? If it is a VDO gauge, wouldn’t I want that one instead of the ORG?

Thanks Paul. This goes beyond the typical maintenance I’ve ever done on a VW engine, but it sounds simple enough to follow your directions.

I wash the car with the roof and side curtains on.
After the car is dry and the roof and curtains are off, I use Meguiars Quik Detail to clean around the areas that were covered when the roof & curtains were on.PMOSSBERG40710.5750231482 -

Hey gunfighter, Classic Roadsters Ltd.’s VW based TDs fill the same way as the Allison, through the “radiator cap”
I’ve had gas station jockeys try to pull the fuel hose from my hands when they see what I’m about to do.
Mark is right about the problem being with the fuel sender and not the gauge. Never reading full is likely due to one of three…[Read more] -

With the top down, I’m spraying each section with Simple Green to remove dirt and oil, etc. I would like to try waxing one fender once I get it cleaned. I’m afraid I still have a small oil leak in the rear, as I’m finding a light coat of oil on the rear fenders and engine cover.I can’t quite figure out how to use a hose, soap bucket and wash m…[Read more]

The fuel gauge is fine…it’s your sender if it’s not reading correctly.
The float arm can be adjusted by removing the sender and measuring the distance to the bottom of the tank. Set your float height about 1/4″ higher (shorter). It should do the trick.
The sender is just a variable resistor like the ones that were in slot car controllers. The…[Read more] -
