I’ll pick up the $2.99 one at my local Auto Zone. The online system didn’t like my AZ customer number so it kept rejecting my order. This seems to be close to what Muir has in his book, a bulb, wire, and alligator clip.

You guys are all great with the advice and I appreciate it. I have not been to my Muir book yet, but just got back from errands and grocery shopping, so now that is put away, I’ll grab the book. When we set the timing yesterday, we tried it at each of the marks on the pulley. The one we set it at seemed to be the best, the others either ad…[Read more]

Don’t go overboard on the test light. It’s a circuit tester, not a continuity tester. It’s a bulb in a handle with a probe on one end and a wire on the other. It lights up when voltage passes through it.
A continuity tester has its own battery and will show a complete circuit when power is not present. You don’t want to connect it to a po…[Read more] -

Of the MG owners, before Carlise, only Ed, Dale, Wobby and I had met.
Next time we meet, we will be sure to quote you to “Lovely Lady”, not just the phrase, but also that you mentioned her BEFORE you mentioned your car! Well done clockdoc! -

This is an excellent guide to static timing the VW engine:

Don’t know. But there are 12-volt circuit testers out there. Why risk it?

In between the $120 tester and the $225 tester are a few “less than $10” testers.PMOSSBERG40701.6095486111

Would this continuity tester work? Is says 3 volts, and I don’t want to fry it with my 12 volt system. Where do I attach the clip? “http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000WU8TQ/ref=asc_df_B0000WU8TQ15 73762?tag=thefind0215939-20&creative=395261&creative ASIN=B0000WU8TQ&linkCode=asn” Thank you,Mark

Larry,
I have the latest copy of the Muir book. He describes both static and strobe timing techniques with the caveat that air cooled engines have to be timed at idle or statically because they have very tight valve trains. If you time them at speed with a light they tend to be advanced and heat up. Hmm. That sounds familiar. We don’t know…[Read more] -

BDriver, You forgot to tell where to point the pointy end of the test light. If I understand it correctly ,the clip on the test light wire is connected to a ground on the engine and the pointed end connects to the small wire terminal on the distributor. Please correct me if this is not correct.
On the engine tin setup, I fully agree to the fac…[Read more] -

MGLondon,
Please read the Muir book on timing. You could be overheating because your timing is advanced. A few degrees off can do it. The type one engine is timed statically with a continuity light indicating when the points open. It looks like a pointy screwdriver with a bulb in the handle and a wire at the end of the handle. You time by li…[Read more] -

I need a new top as well as mine is dry rotted and torn. I was thinking of taking it to a marine top maker to have one made. Matching the tan of the side curtins may be a little difficult however.

Rich, I bought the car May 28th. It was located in Tarpon Springs, Florida and now resides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It’s my first MGTD and I am very excited to have it. If you think the pics look good you should see it in person. Especially after a good coat of wax. It’s not a 10 but a good solid 9 with the only flaws being some surface rust on…[Read more]

You must keep the tins in that keep the upper and lower parts of the engine
away from each other – otherwise you will get all the heat from the exhaust
area back into the upper engine area – more heat!
I solved this issue for my car by installing two scoops made from HVAC duct
and ran 3 or 4″ lines up to my front firewall that pushed cool air into…[Read more] -

Yes, Allison did build a front engine version. There were two on e-bay in the last two years, one in Va.and one in Tenn. The engine and drivetrain were Nissan. Very nice and very rare. The one in Tenn. was being sold by a grandaughter to help her grandmother. The asking price was $13.000.I don’t know if they sold it. I think the one in Va. did s…[Read more]
