Fuel pump diaphragm bursts? really? Hadn’t heard that one but if Greg
(Wolfgang on the Samba) says it’s so than maybe it is. He built his
Speedster engine 20 years ago and has yet to fire it up, though, so
then again maybe it’s not.Whatever, the oil smells like gas because unburned fuel is getting into the crank case. Besides that bad fuel pump,…[Read more]

Thanks Rich, but what you just said is like Mandarin to me. I am not much of a mechanic. I can change the oil and that is about it. Someone just mentioned this to me: The diaphragm may have ruptured which decreases it’s ability to pump fuel and also dumps gas into your oil. What would cause the diaphragm to rupture? It is after all, a brand new…[Read more]

A couple small things to check is the choke open all the way 2 are you flooding and having gas wash by rings.3has oil level gone up 4 Is breathing tube plug for crank case I would start with that. Rich

Pretty sure Rich Wobby has the same car as you. Check out his pics for an idea of what a real sweet top looks like. He’s got the TD-like framed side curtains too. These are expensive but actually serve a purpose if you’re the kind of insufferable w**ker (as I am) who’d like to be able to tool around with the hood down but the side curtains up.His…[Read more]

Thanks, Paul. The spare is actually only about 3 years old, according to the code date on the sidewall. The other four are different, presumably much older, though I’ve not been able to get a bead on just how old. Possibly 2003, probably 1993.

Richard,
I am w/ Ed – if you used a pressure system and lots of fluid you most likely
have a bad MC out of the box ( made in China ). Pull it and send it back for
another.

Thanks, CA. I actually dropped the front back down about a half inch before setting the toe-in (took a lot longer this time). Gonna take her to a suspension shop this week for a 4-wheel alignment; I’ll see if they can dial back the negative camber a bit out back. That should stand her up just a little higher, if it’s possible. If not I’ll just…[Read more]

Rich. Was just talking about you today with Greg (“Wolfgang” on the Speedster forum). He’s thinking of towing his mess to the show & having us keep working there on it. Said I was game but didn’t know if we might be under your car–or Paul’s (apparently not). Anyway, glad you’re up and running. Assume you checked all your fittings and couplings…[Read more]

Dunno, Rich. Maybe late summer, but you’re the first to respond so, when’s good for you?If recollection holds true, Stoney does his roast beef dinner with yorkshire pudding on Saturday eves. He’s a scotch fan but mostly also a bar owner, so you’ll get vodka if you want. Keeps a keg or two of Guinness on site too.

The ride height looks good Ed!!
You might want to make sure that the original shocks aren’t bottoming out half way thru
your suspension travel. I imagine I set my ride height similar to yours since we both had
the same type of issues. In my case the “shorty” shocks keep me from getting complete
extension but the normal shocks bottom out…[Read more] -

The gauges are actually VDO gauges made in Brazil specifically for the MP
Lafers. The ones in my car were fairly beat up so I bought new front
glasses (originals were plastic except the speedo and tach) and bezels. I
disassembled, cleaned and reassembled the gauges with the new
components.Original gauges…
After rebuilding them……

Um, thanks Ed…But you guys apparently don’t understand what I mean by “I don’t have access to my garage and car and engine yet.”Under the consent order governing our separation, I am not allowed at the house for anything other than what is necessary to maintain the house. Um, yeah…you will end up cleaning it a spoke at a time.Wheel brushes do a good job. But if you are picky, each spoke will get some personal attention.
