I am certainly not beyond playing the system as much as possible and have considered previously what you suggest. There are two problems here in Mo. One is that after getting a title it must be inspected by the Highway Patrol for matching part numbers and Vin’s. It is virtually impossible to get something like this past them. Secondly is insu…[Read more]

Might I make another suggestion…
Buying a title, online, or a junked Kit with a good title for cheap. then just move the info to the kit you’re hoping to buy…I’m too stupid to know any better but I plead the 5th and spread eagle and all that legal stuff…All I know is that sometimes, you’ve got to play as dirty as the bureaucrats to get…[Read more]

Current owner I don’t think even knows builder. Builder died 5 years ago and the current owner bought it at a sale I think. He parked it in storage and left it set. Now 4 years later he drags it out and decides to sell it but has no papers at all and very little information regarding its history. It needed wired and some other minor thing whe…[Read more]

Is the person who is selling it the Executor of the builder’s estate? If so, can you get a bill of sale for the “uncompleted” kit listing it as pieces? You could then become the “builder” of record. Check and see if that will pass the documentation check.

I have given up. I went to the Highway Patrol and got just bad news, I then went to the State Office of Motor Vehicles where I got more bad news and referred to the Circut Court Clerk. I went there and got more bad news regarding declaritory judgements, etc. I then called the guy who had it and told him what I found out, which of course ruin…[Read more]

Good luck with the hunt! I had to part out a 29 Gazelle since I couldn’t get the darn thing smog approved and registered (Titled as a 99 special construction vehicle)! The guy at the smog shop told me “Hey, she’s a VW…If it’s not Smokin…It’s broken!” He thought it was funny, while I just returned home with my tail between my legs!
Yesterday,…[Read more]

I did the same, with my toy. Marine Grade all the way! West Marine is where I purchased my fuse panel (12 fuse capacity), relays, switches and even the wire! I’ve yet to have a single problem, since I rewired her…I also went crazy with grounding posts. All of my electrical items are on it’s own fuse, relay, and ground connection. I just check…[Read more]

Ed,
If Susanne is free that weekend (she often has a conflicting event), we will have the IM and the Boxster.
If not, I’m not sure. Likely will be a weather related decision.

In Georgia they won’t title any vehicle as old as mine. MY TDr is on a 71 VW chassis so they won’t even consider it. Registration was pretty simple with bill of sale. Moneypenny is registered as a 1971VW-Other. Still wish I had a title for it though because without it Moneypenny is destined to live forever in Georgia. Unless the laws change.…[Read more]

Ed, once again, gives good advice.
North Carolina allows a different route: Home-made. Allowing for our pre-NASCAR bootlegger and stock car heritage. Some inspections are required.

These are small prices for what you’re looking at. Maybe spend $100 with the lawyer first and fashion the deal thusly:
You sign a contract with the seller promising to pay $2500 WHEN the car is titled, with $500 earnest money fronted.
Seller petitions for the title, with you and your lawyer’s help. You pay any court/legal costs.
???
Profits.

David, I was lucky to find a marine panel that was divided into two 6 fuse sections plus an additional section for grounds. Biggest problem for me was the two speed wiper motor. VW’s original wiper switch was unique Fiber Fab’s answer was to make it single speed and ignore the parking circuit. I figured something out to make it work corr…[Read more]

Exactly what I did, using marine grade switches with 15 amp ratings and 15 amp rated relays. I also separated circuits between ignition switched loads and switched loads on two marine grade spade fuse panels. Also upgraded grounds so there was no difference in resistance for any electrical loads, essentially a copper buss bar in front and…[Read more] -
