New springs solved steering issue. New high torque starter solved intermittent starting issue. New fuel pump solved rough running issue. Almost had a disaster when top radiator hose came loose on test run. Bought bottled water at convenience store and everything OK. Now ready for a test run on Interstate. Probably have wife follow in her car.

Nice to see that you have the car on the road. Once you get the kinks worked out, I would be glad to help you with a V6 and 5 speed conversion.

Folks-
As my TDr has become my daily driver M-F, I am wondering what folks do for a center console – more specifically, what do you do to hold that morning cup of lifer juice (coffee)? My TDr is VW based and the hand brake is well forward of the shifter, giving me a space between the seat bottoms where a cup holding contraption of some sort w…[Read more]

…and I thought I was being risky in running the RPMs up to 3500 — but this is an unknown engine that has about 30 miles put on it by me — prior to that it was sitting for a year in the PO’s shed and prior to that, it was in a 1988 Mustang prior to being swapped out for a 5.0L V8….
The PO pulled the throttle body injection off and installed…[Read more]

It was fine at 3-4 grand. Flog it at 6. It was the sustained 7 that did it in.
Keep in mind it was cammed and ran a 4 barrel carb. The cam came on at about 2,500.

I’ll let Bill answer but pretty sure he usually shifted at 8,000 rpm whether it needed it or not.

Thanks Bill —
A quick question: think back to when you had that SMALL, OLD, FORD 2.3L engine in your car — what was the red line RPM? What RPM did you typically shift/run the car?
I’ve been a VW-kit person and don’t know “kit” about this Ford engine….????

I can’t remember how I got mine to work. I remember it was an accident, so probably I grounded the wire to the GEN light or something.
Again, this was the Subaru engine (and alternator).
If I knew what to do I’d tell you. When I don’t know what to do I just Google and then start, ya know, trying…[Read more]

I am using an incandescent bulb – the original bulb was blown when I got the car.
Trying to figure out how excite the winding on the Motorola alternator I have. B+ wire to the field terminal?
I have wired the alt lamp directly to terminal 15 on the coil and still get no light nor any charge – even at close to 3k RPM.
For sake of full…[Read more]

IT’S ALIVE!!!
I finally got the North Carolina VIN attached to the car, Hagerty Insurance, and registration done — I timed it just as the forecast calls for 2 weeks of rain.
By the way, the “won’t idle below 2500 RPM turned out to be a problem with the progressive Weber carb on the car. The throttle plate would not close completely, even w…[Read more]

Yes, it is true about residual charge on the windings. That is the purpose of the charging indicator light circuit, however. A good article from SpeedyJim’s web page.

Oh, sorry. After I put my brain back on, I realize that the picture is of your grate which I think is quite nice.

Maybe, but I won’t be doin it, I was thinking (DANGER/WARNING) more like the mesh grill in a blower Bentley or the like.

So, I guess yours is lost or not handsome enough.
I wonder if the grate from a gas grill could be adapted and look good?? Chrome or porcelain black?

I think you need to excite the field windings in your alternator. I had the same symptom when I put the Suby in Bridget.
Here’s a vid showing how it’s done with a Delco GM one.
