  • Dan,
When I grew up in Knoxville, I loved Cherokee. To show my age, Gatlinburg was a fraction of what it is today. I remember two little diners, one close to the park entrance on the right side that was very good, a few motels and a handful of shops. A sleepy little town. Today is a different story indeed. Since I don’t drive my car in the rain, I…[Read more]

  • I have been driving on a set of 80 spoke real wire eheels from MG Magic. I am veryy happy with then . They are made by MCLean Wheels.
I started with tubeless installation, I could park the car foe 30 days and not loose any air. I could drive it 50 miles and loose 10 pounds of pressure.
My recomendation is to tube the rims and don’t worry about…[Read more]

  •  Paul, Thanks for the info.I spent almost an hour on W Lee’s site and was encouraged in my faith as well as my hobby. He is a very informed man with a lot of knowledge in many areas of life and has the ability to put it in words that are very thought provoking.

  • One thing I meant to contribute regarding the MG Magic wire wheels.  They are TUBELESS.  Although they are true wire wheels – the manufacturer has installed a sealed band inside the hub that separates the spoke holes from the inner hub space where the tire mounts.  I was skeptical at first – but all 5 tires have held air properly for about 9 mo…[Read more]

It was a pleasure to meet you and Becky on this beautiful day.  And I appreciate the chance to look over the two really great MG TD replicas in your stable.  As a relative newcomer to the replica car world it is always helpful to see how things have been done on some of the nicer cars.   Mark’s PinkMG is certainly an eye catcher.  I plan…[Read more]

  •  John [hawlk521] and his wife Linda drove their Chevette based MG over to our house today . The wire wheels from MG MAGIG look great and suit the car perfectly. They have just the  right offset and back space to fit just where they should within the fenders .I was impressed with the car as John has done an excellent job with the assembly and he ha…[Read more]

Coffey PM me as to price for the baskets and backing cups? if you are selling the wheel I guess I can’t use them   Dan R

  • Real wires usually are in the $400 to $500 range. I’m amazed to read about a set of four for $650. Heck, twenty years ago, Dayton had a 52 spoke 15″ wire wheel for the VW four-bolt pattern. And a four wheel set was well over $1,000 then.I just started a new thread on conversations I have been having with the folks at Truespoke.Take a look… wire wheels?

  • Phil replied to the topic VW alternator in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years, 11 months ago

My second car was a 74 beetle and it had an alternator with external regulator as does my mgtd.
I don’t know for sure but the way to tell if it has an internal or external regulator may be by the number of terminals in the connector on top of the alternator.
If it is the original alternator it likely has an external regulator.  I think that all o…[Read more]

  • Bill,
I took a look in my Bentley manual and found this.
“All 1974 and later cars have alternators. But since late in the 1974 model year, the alternator has had an intergral-type regulator mounted atop it.”
So, it looks like most alternators have external but intergral regulators.  What the heck that means I don’t know since all my beetles had…[Read more]

  •  Bill, When you first asked the question about VW alternators ,I looked on the Rock Auto Parts site and all the regulators I saw listed looked like they mounted inside the alternator. Could it be that all VW alternators have internal regulators? I hope someone with more exact info will reply. My VW based car is still running a generator so I am…[Read more]

  • Since I first posted this question, I’ve been told that Volkswagen changed to an alternator with an integral (internal) regulator in late 1974. If this is true, do the numbers on the alternator tell if it does or dosen’t have an internal regulator? Oh! the price we pay when we choose to take the cheap route.

  • The Ford bolt pattern is 4×4.25″ (108mm) and uses a 7/16×20 stud
The Chevette is 4x100mm and uses a 12mmx1.50 stud.
I bought the 14″ wheels that are on Larry Murphy’s BCW Chevette TD from U.S. Wheel. The sit just right on the car too.
Keep in mind that offset is not back space.
