Lot of speculation on line about the weight differences. Everything from “about 110 pounds” to “about 10 pounds.”

I think it’s gonna be closer to 100 than 10.
Here’s an MG guy who says the crate 302 weighs 300…[Read more]

Bill, hope that this doesn’t put you in the same hillclimb class as your son. My guess is that you are going to have to spend a lot of time learning how to drive your TDr as it is going to handle like a totally different car in the twisties. How is it going to affect your balance F to R? Are you changing springs or shocks?
I once drove a Su…[Read more]

Lots done Saturday. Old motor is now out and I’ll probably spend my spare time today cleaning. There is oil residue everywhere.
New motor has been ordered.

And done.
Shrunk it down, wrapped in ‘lectric tape and zip-tied to the main wiring loom to keep it from falling back down to where it got burned. Test-drive and all seems to be in order.

Ah, well-done, Andy. 20 miles in two years? This person is in for some shaming. 🙂 Hopefully he’ll redeem himself now!

I have a classic VW Resto shop, so I know what you mean about the tabs. Only issue I ran into was the adjustement screw was a bit taller than the stock box and was not clearing the body work. Cut about 3/8″ off and cut a new slot on the top. Set the toe and drove the hell out of it. Steering is still a little sensitive and tight, but I had reb…[Read more]

Yep, I was about to say.
Remember when you put the new one in to line it up right-careful with the steering shaft, and to bend over those metal tabs on the clamp nut.

Update: So I turned the key on in the nice quiet garage and got no fuel pump whirr. Checked the fuses there, the connections, and finally wired it direct to the battery to make sure it would whirr if so energized.
It did.
Had a closer look at my burnt O2 connector and noticed a bare wire. A-HA! Something hot got grounded to the cat, and that…[Read more]

Turns out it was really easy. Unbolted the coupler, and dropped the pitman arm. Removed the clamp. Gave it a slight twist and pulled it out the side. About 15 minutes into this and am installing the new box right now. Ponder this before cutting the body to make adjustments……Technically the steering box can be set up on a bench…

We made it through as well although Charlene, Lucifer and I evacuated to Louisiana on the 7th. We left the 560SL and the TDr in the garage under car covers, just in case, so the only fear I had was of flooding. No major damage to the house or cars when we got back yesterday and power was already back. All in all, it could have been much worse.

Rough luck. You’re right, that burnt connector “should” have only tripped the light. First things first, fix that and go from there. Good luck. Hope it’s something simple.
(Thank the heavens for AAA)

I was about half way to work, rolling to a red light, when I looked down and noticed the tach drop to zero. A couple of seconds later the engine stalled and wouldn’t start.
With the help of the panhandler on that corner, I pushed Bridget to the gas station two lanes to my right. Checked fuses. Tried to restart, looked for burnt wires, tried to…[Read more]
