That picture of the two of you in the car together is awesome. The look on his face is just precious. The two of you will have a lot of happy memories with that car.
Congrats on the progress.
P.S. Love the vintage amplifier in your garage, wish I still had mine. 😀

Did a little more work on car. When I purchased the kit the engine cover and body tub were predrilled by the original owner. Evidently he drilled the engine cover to fit WITHOUT the body on the chassis. The body is to far from the engine fan shroud and when I close the engine cover it scrapes the top. I need about 3/8 inch to get the clearance…[Read more]

Okay. After pulling the spare tire mount and closing the engine cover, it still catches. Performed a good inspection with the engine cover still hung up and found the top right of the inside of the engine cover is catching on the top right of the rear face of the fan shroud. I will have to grind down a little on the engine cover. I’ll take some…[Read more]

Most of the parts came in so yesterday was spent installing the new distributor, plugs, wires, fuel lines, tuning the carb, etc…
Stirling approves and was wearing his car-tuning clothes.
Working on getting it in. After setting the engine to TDC-compression (verified by pulling the valve cover on the right bank and finding TDC after the…[Read more]

I believe the top bolts that hold the spare tire support are hanging on the rear face of the fan shroud. I will take the spare tire support off tomorrow and see how that works. In the library tab, if you go to the VW/CMC manual, page 39 covers the spare tire mount installation. It calls for seven 5/16 x 1-1/4 inch bolts. I believe these 1-1/4…[Read more]

If it has 1981 and MiGi it sounds like you’re looking at the kit serial number. I think that’s irrelevant to your registration unless the car’s never been registered before by a state motor vehicle department.

Do you have any pics showing why the cover is hanging up. I have a FF with the same kind of cover design that you have described but have not encountered the problem you have described. Problem I have is that weight of tire on cover exceeds lifting capability of the gas struts I have installed. Have to do some fibreglass reinforcement when…[Read more] -

If you are looking at the VIN on the ownership documents it may have been assigned by the DoT for the state/province where it was first registered. If there is a VW chassis then you find the original VIN on the tunnel between the seats in front of the inspection plate. See this link for decoding the…[Read more] -

I have an engine cover fitment problem. Engine cover opens from the bottom to top and opens no problem. However, when I close the engine cover it goes about 2/3rd of the way down and then hits the back of the cover. Any suggestions?

Thanks to those that posted.
I think I’ll try David’s approach, it should solve my problem.
I have bought several items from Jbug and MG Magic already it seem neither had individual socket replacements.

What I did was buy some generic 1157 and 1156 sockets from Carquest/NAPA and some boots from MG Magic. Used the 1157 for brakes and driving lights and the 1156 for signal light circuit. Alternatively you could buy VW rear light fixtures but I could not find after market fixtures so would have been faced with searching wreckers yards or swap meets.…[Read more]
