That would be great on a pan-off refit. Better yet to have a stick of some kind with a remote trigger to feed the can all the way to the shift coupler area, start it spraying and slowly drag it through to the front port of the tunnel.

I took some of Ed’s advice today: “Take the car out and speed it up to 50 or 60 and jam on the brakes for a panic stop. Do it 5 or 6 times. Then drive slowly home braking as normal.” I also did Royal’s test: “Do the brakes squeal when you apply the parking/emergency brake?”
First the parking brake. I used only the parking brake to slow me …[Read more]

My rims are stock, steel, 4-lug, 15 inch rims with a 5.5 offset. The only marking on the 4 rims is the letter T. All 4 are from JBugs in Calif. According to their web site (jbugs.com), this translates to a 4-5/16 inch offset. The tire should fit in the center of the fender openings. (I hope).

FYI, if you want a slightly wider tire than the 165/80 series, here is what 185/70 series look like on the stock 4″ VW wheels underneath a TDr… they’re the same height as the 165s.

…..and then “repaint the inside of the tunnel.” ?? The only way I can think of would be a bit like throwing a hand grenade??

Recent posting on Samba re losing brake fluid with no readily apparent cause for leak or where fluid was leaking reported that master cylinder was leaking into chassis and fluid was pooling in tunnel. Found that when car was accelerating fluid flowed to back of tunnel and leaked out at transmission area giving false impression of transmission…[Read more]

I hope it all comes together for you. My second car was a Spitfire with 4sp overdrive. Fast as stink. My roommate got a ticket in Texas for doing 110mph. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to try that kind of trick in a TDr!

Ed has some good advice. My guess is that the noise is from the springs which are contacting the brake drum when the brakes are applied. They may be on backwards….or perhaps they are the wrong springs. If you don’t have an “Idiots” book, it is a worthwhile investment.
Do the brakes squeal when you apply the parking/emergency brake? Try to…[Read more]

Interesting problem. I’d never heard of rear brakes making so much racket. Something, for sure, ain’t right.
One thing to check is the inside edge of the shoes, to see if they are rubbing on the backing plate. If they are, a little Never-Seize or brake anti-squeal paste should get it. Keep it off the working faces of the shoes and drums. If you…[Read more]

I’m looking forward to reading about your progress! It’s great to be in a club with such creative and brilliant minds, now if we could just get you all to Washington DC. Quite ambitious for a project and I can’t wait to see the finished work.
