Paul offers some great advice on troubleshooting a sticky accelerator. My bet is on the cable binding somewhere – at the fan shroud, in the cable housing itself, or at the accelerator pedal. I’d only add one thing to my and Paul’s previous input. Operate the throttle manually at the carb, from the rear. Use your fingers to move the linkage lever…[Read more]

Hey John, you may want to do a google search for “Robs and Dave’s VW Repair”. They are a good web resource on all things VW. A lot of my VW Samba friends use their online advice for questions, and problems. I only use a local VW Dune Buggy shop here in Florida, as they rebuilt my engine for $1600, (just a long block rebuild) It sounds like after…[Read more]

Well if your tach is reading incorrectly, and the actual engine speed is 850 (or half of the 1700 you are seeing), then your idle speed is fine. Quick check…What does your tach read at about 60 mph? With a stock trans, it should be about 3,000.On to the “sticking” throttle….Is the tube in place that carries your throttle cable through the fan…[Read more]

Stephens Buggy repair has been around for a long, long time unless I’m mistaken. Longevity says a lot about their business practices… Suggest you find a shop that really knows aircooled VWs and their quirks. The squeaky brakes, if from the front is likely caused by the calipers sticking slightly on the pins. If so, there’s a lubricant that can be…[Read more]

ASC consolidated all it’s resources to Southgate Michigan (next to Detriot) in 1970. My Title includes a reference to “ASC” but the body plates on the car show it as BCW build number 365.
Somewhere there must have been some sort of “ASC” reference – I wondered if some of the Chevette’s were perhaps obtained through ASC.Didn’t someone post that th… -

Well. My info is BCW made their own body panels & stuff. I don’t know where they got their Chevettes, but a west-coast accessory company would not be the obvious source. We could call Jack Fussenegger and ask.

Can you elaborate on “ I adapted a “Walking Foot” for better sewing the heavy Vinyl” I am using a Singer from 1940 with standard foot and it will not take foot from wife’s 1970 vintage Singer. I am in the process of replacing my interior, on my 1985 self built Classic Roadsters Dutchess. I have already completed the Convertible Top, using Marine Grade Tan Vinyl. Interesting enough, I got the plastic for the rear window, from Walmart Fabric Dept. it is a very heavy guage clear plastic. For the interior vinyl, I am using the same color…[Read more]

Ed, Fussenneggers did not own ASC but I’m wondering if they had them make the body panels to their specifications or even provide the stripped down Chevette’s because of their connections with Detroit.
ASC had it’s start as a distributorship of an earlier German company that made those old sliding/folding canvas sunroofs for VW’s in the late 1… -

None in mine. But here’s my theory–which you can check by chasing some corporate records in PA: Like BCW, American Sunroof WAS the Fussenegger’s company & the factories were tied together.

Steve. If thickness of fibreglass dash is the same thickness of body e.g 3/16 ” then only issue you may encounter will be whether shafts on switches are long enough to extend through fibreglass and overlay of wood dash. I started with rough sawn 5/4 walnut and with thickness planer was able to reduce thickness to 3/4″ so that I could reuse most of…[Read more]

Hey Folks,
Not sure if this is the sub-category for this but iIn looking over the paperwork (Title and Insurance) for my BCW, I noticed a reference to “ASC” (which stands for American Sunroof Corporation). In addition to providing sunroofs and t-tops to automakers in Detroit and overseas, as well as some short run customizations (1980’s Buick R… - Load More
