Thanks to all for the warm welcome.I will post some pic’s next week(busy mother’s day weekend). I will definitely check out the EMPI muffler, shift kit and heat shield advice. The MG was recently painted by the previous owner so I hate to scorch it. I also now have a carb problem. It has a Holly 2bl and it starts right up every time, but then dies.I…[Read more]

Allen,
Not that easyI ended up using the stainless steel straps you can purchase at the car parts places ( Auto Zone etc. ) for securing the exhaust heat wrap. Comes in different sizes and strapped it to the top of my exhaust pipes that were ( in my case ) directly in contact w/ my apron. I also used the adhesive sided heat shield ( says up to 1500… -

Schu. How is the cat heat shield secured to the underside of the valance? Not sure if I’ll need one but in case………………….. 🙂

The cat heat shield is a great idea schu!
I had been thinking about the blistering paint issue. In 32 years with my VW powereed Duchess, I’ve never had a problem. But I guess this is another of those issues that “varies by mamnfacturer.” -

Dana,
The CMC/Fiberfab kits do have a problem w/ the mufflers being to close to the apron – you will see this on a lot of cars w/ burnt aprons – mine included. I ended up getting a heat shield from a modern car in a junk yard that shields the Cat from the car. This seems to help a lot in my case. -

Welcome to you Dana. The shift rod bushing is not a fun job, but very manageable for a novice and a good introduction to the joys of the TD Replica. When you’re done you will be happy with your car’s shifting.
Better yet to add the “quick shift” kit available at all VW aftermarket retailers. The spendy one, made of metal, retails for about $18. The… -

Welcome aboard Dana.
Roy nailed it. The most likely suspect for your poor shifting is a worn bushing inside the tunnel.Take a look at this post. The third and fourth pictures show the bushing and the shift rod. The thread also talks about how… -

Welcome! If you are from Tn, you must know KentT. :DFirst the muffler question: Most of us run some sort of aftermarket muffler. The one I run and see most often is an EMPI 3487 which is not a performance muffler but looks TDish with it’s chrome single tip. If there is nothing goofy about your build and you have the engine tin installed you…[Read more]

I knew when I said unkind things about the prospect of going to a hydraulic clutch I was tempting fate. So now I buggered up the clutch.:x
Basically, the old clutch cable is jammed inside the tube. I have no idea how this is even possible. Figured I would have trouble pushing the new one in. But no. Or not yet. because I can’t pull the old one… -

Well, I just checked on pure-gas.org, and the closest source to my place would be Crockett, about 2 hours up U.S. 59. I like the website, though.

Roy. I found the kit on eBay and bought it. Should be here just before I head to DC.

My engine couldn’t possibly possibly run better. We need a test platform. Do you think that carb cleaner is flammable/volatile enough?
-
edward ericson replied to the topic carb cleaner in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
Wait–why not? If it’s the fuel circuit you want to hit, wouldn’t it make sense to run the stuff through the fuel lines?
-
Royal replied to the topic carb cleaner in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
Allen, looks lik.e you and I are the only ones that are old enough (or were poor enough) to know of this stuff.I may put some carb cleaner in my small portable gas tank (aka Briggs and Stratton gas tank) and try running it through my buddy’s carb. (Just kidding Jack.)

I have that tool that Paul linked. Not that brand, but the same type of contraption. It sucks cleaner from a container through a vacuum hose into the intake manifold. Works fine on today’s fuel injected cars but would do nothing for cleaning a carb. Speaking of ethanol…have you checked this?http://pure-gas.org/

The valve cover is connected to the rest of the crankcase via the oil drainback scheme. Blow-by from a leaking piston ring would cause increased pressure in the crankcase and this is one really common way for valve cover gaskets to get blown.

Not quite. This system (I think) hooks up to an aerosol can and squirts cleaner into the air plenum. It would possibly clean the manifolds, valves, and combustion chambers but do nothing for carb internal passages and accelerator pump. The kit I remember was not aerosol but liquid that you ran through the fuel circuit actually cleaning those…[Read more]
