Montie,
Right now the route Triple A provided me is more to the north, coming into Ohio near Van Wert on Route 224. I told Triple A to plan the route using backcounty roads, with 55 mph limits, etc. Maybe, on the way back to CA, change the route and swing south. Is Route 40 a slow type road or an Interstate with big rigs blowing me all over?BillBad Bill
May 22, 2015 at 6:24 pm #26453540 is an Interstate.

I40 starts at Barstow Ca. and ends in North Carolina. Route 40 built in the 20’s starts in San Francisco and ends in Atlantic city N J.. Route 40is like Route 66 parts of it are not in use. Route 40 was the first cross country roadway . Route 40 is also called the Lincoln Highway.
May 22, 2015 at 8:39 pm #264537The original Lincoln Highway is Rt. 30 and runs just south of me.

"Drive Happy"May 22, 2015 at 10:43 pm #264538John,
We could meet in Parker, AZ and head East from there on State Route 72 to Vicksburg, then head North to Flagstaff, then follow Route 160 to New Mexico, and then only a couple of thousand miles to go.What do you think?BillBad Bill
May 23, 2015 at 7:24 am #264539Like George said, 40 is not an interstate. It is part of the original “Crossroads of America Highways” where old rt 40 and old 25 met in Vandalia Oh. I70 has replaced 40 E/W and I75 has replaced 25 N/S. Both 40 and 25 are still used, but more for the scenic routes. Max speed in places about 55 but mostly 35 especially thru all the small cities.
May 23, 2015 at 10:36 am #264540Well today I learned something new. I usually travel north/south but have taken I-40 once heading out west. Thought I-40 was built from Rt. 40.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackMay 23, 2015 at 1:29 pm #264541Hi Bill.
After looking up the proposed route I think that would be splendid. Take our time and make an adventure out of every mile. We have a place in Va too so we may stay in the east for a while after our Carlisle experience. (just a thought). Just thinking about the parts we should take with us, if any? Something to think about and plan over the months before we leave.
This could end up being some serious fun.

I got a route pretty well mapped out that would keep us on the backroads, roads suited to our mature machines. Figure 7 to 10 days across country, rest up and site see back there for 5 days or so, then turn around and do it in reverse.BillBad Bill
May 23, 2015 at 1:38 pm #264543John,
Site see meaning local sites, in lieu of sight see.

May 23, 2015 at 1:51 pm #264544That works Bill. Should be some nice back roads too. I wonder if some of the other guys in this part of the world would care to tag along?

Aren’t there a couple more members in your area. They probably have to be old like us and retired, so they can take a month off. I guess that’s one of the blessings of having aged wonderfully.BillBad Bill
May 23, 2015 at 4:54 pm #264547Before folks start debating the numbers for the Lincoln Highway, the route numbers assigned to the original route of the Lincoln Highway vary from state to state, and often within a state.
The route runs from New York City to San Francisco.
Sounds like a retirement plan, to drive the entire thing!

May 23, 2015 at 10:29 pm #264548I take Rt 40 to work every day.
May 23, 2015 at 10:54 pm #264549AnonymousInactiveED : I have relatives that live off of Route 40 near Hancock Md. Grandmother lived in Sir John’s Run. West Virginia. Robert Fulton was said to have tried his steamboat there. At that point you can go from Virginia Into West Virginia into Maryland and then into Pa. in less than 20 minutes.
May 24, 2015 at 10:41 am #264550Hmmm…always thought Fulton tested his first steamboat on the Hudson River. Even the University of Virginia agrees with that.

June 21, 2015 at 9:33 pm #264551Bill sent two Auto-x pics of me he found on the PA Hill Climb web site. I could not find them on that site so I’m reposting them anyway.
The other one is on my blog, along with unrelated folderol.June 22, 2015 at 5:48 am #264552Ed, I’m sure you noticed, but from the last pic on your blog, it looks like your front port wheel is gnawing on your fender. No???
June 22, 2015 at 6:24 am #264553Yes, I noticed.
