Hey Guys,
I have been getting the MIGI ready to roll. I got most of the wiring done on the back-end and the dash (gauges, turn signals, wipers, etc…) I was going to finish my front markers/turn signals and head lights when I was looking for somewhere to run the marker/turn signal wires (along the fender braces) and discovered there aren’t any. I know I should have really looked this thing over before I bought it but I was in Washington DC and it was in Pennsylvania. I didn’t think to ask if it had fender braces. Anyway now I need to find some. I am worried that the headlight stanchions wont be enough, at speed, to stop the flexing of the fenders. Any suggestions? I found some 32 Ford fender braces that I guess I could modify but maybe one of you clever fellows could suggest something that has a close curvature.
Thanks!

April 1, 2015 at 4:43 pm #263949Dean, I ain’t got none either. Daytona VW. Everything is quite sturdy anyway less than 70mph.
April 1, 2015 at 4:58 pm #263950Well my FF TDr doesn’t have any fender braces and I haven’t ever had a problem with flexing.
April 1, 2015 at 6:55 pm #263951Hey Guys – Thanks for your input. It is good to know that the fenders are strong enough on their own.

"Drive Happy"April 1, 2015 at 7:27 pm #263954According to build manual there were supplied with the kit (maybe an option?). If you want to add them the guys at http://www.prototyperesearch.com/ do have them for $49.00 a pair. I am going to add them just for a little more strength. Thanks again guys. I love this forum!

April 1, 2015 at 7:42 pm #263955Well, you piqued my curiosity, but I didn’t see anything in their MG partslist. I’m concerned that that parts and pricelist is from 2007.

"Drive Happy"April 1, 2015 at 7:58 pm #263956Yeah Bill, I emailed them today and they got back to me. They will want to know it the car is front or rear engine. I also asked for a picture but they don’t have one available. You can get some idea of what they look like here http://www.abingdonsparesllc.com/catpg45detail.html or on page 32 of the MIGI assembly manual.

April 1, 2015 at 8:33 pm #263957Braces sounded like a good idea to me in case some @3$!!* leans on the fender. It was easy to bend a tubular piece of steel and mount one end under the outer lower head light support were it attaches to the fender. The other end reaches down to the frame right about where the top of the front shock mounts . I got the idea from pictures of original TDs having such a brace.
April 1, 2015 at 9:09 pm #263958My two cents…sounds like unnecessary work.
The headlight bracket ties the front end together and supports the fenders. They won’t flex. I promise.Originals had them because they were made of sheet metal that is thinner, more flexible and more susceptible to damage than our fiberglass.Paul Mossberg

April 2, 2015 at 3:32 am #263959In regards to wires for the lights, mine doesn’t have braces either and one side in front detached from the underside of the fender where they were obviously glued on, as well as undercoating the builder put on it. I’m going to use a weatherproof glue.
I’ve driven the car up to 75 MPH very briefly and didn’t seem like anything was shaking apart, including the convertible top, just maybe straining the 1600 VW engine. And my ears with the noise.LRH2015-04-02 03:33:35

That wasn’t noise…that was the 1600 VW engine’s raw horsepower you were hearing!
Like Paul wrote our fenders are much thicker being fiberglass and flex way less. Braces are not needed. As for the wires for the lights, I ran my parking light wires through a flat (sort of) fiberglass sleeve I made on the underside of the fender and then ran the wires into the front trunk area. Headlights wires are run through a conduit from the headlight bracket to the side of the front trunk area.

The head light support appears to hold the fenders steady, and I have had people lean on the fenders or try to flex them, with no apparent problems. If you do add fender braces, be sure to double check the clearance of the tire as you turn it, so it does not interfere with the stop to stop turning of the tire. Like the other replys, I do not think the fenders need additional support. We can over build our cars and spend additional money that is not needed, except for our own personal disere and satisfaction.
Just my two cents

April 3, 2015 at 10:19 pm #263964I still like the added support, and besides, it does make a good place to attach turn signal lamp wires so they are not flopping around under the fender.]
