I will be looking for a TD Replica to buy near the end of October or early November. Will be checking the forums semi-regularly up until that time, if anyone is thinking of selling, or knows of a car available, would welcome a heads-up so I can investigate and possibly schedule a trip to view the car sometime after October 28. Particularly interested in cars with paper to support having been built and registered in their MG incarnation prior to 1994 due to Canadian importation laws. Also interested in hearing of cars available that are already registered in Canada. I look forward to hearing from you. Also, if there are any Canadians out there reading this that have gone through the importation of a kit car from the US, I would appreciate any tips that you can offer. Thanks very much.
September 9, 2009 at 10:29 am #239693Welcome Groncher. I read the other posts before it was moved here. If you want to know ANYTHING about Bill Collins “Angelica” you can ask me…I built the car and sold it to Bill. He’s made a few mods to the car since he got it, but nothing that really changed any of the basic build I did.
The car was originally assembled for me, but not to my satisfaction. I ended up completely disassembling it and started over with all brand new parts. It’s not your average VW based TD mechanically. I went “top shelf” with everything.
I am 6’4″ and just over 260 lbs. I had no problem setting up the VW based car to fit my frame comfortably. The VW based cars are easily set up for taller people.
However, the Chevette based BCW car I sold to Larry Murphy was a problem with foot room for my size 13’s. The car was a manual transmission. I suspect with an automatic trans, there would have been more than enough foot room.

Take a look at this NY kit. It may still be available. It is just the kit for a VW based vehicle. Don’t know if getting the kit and building it in Canada would make a difference, or if you’re looking for turn-key.

Thanks for the lead, I will check if it is still available….one of the frustrating things is that just earlier today I was trying all kinds of search strings, and didn’t find any kits listed. I have saved that site as a favourite. Ebay, Kijiji and Craigslist can all be difficult to search too. Will have to contact the local DMV about the possibility of building….don’t think that should be too much of a problem, I just didn’t think there would be unbuilt kits still out there. Again, I really appreciate the lead. Hmmmm….would one of these kits fit in a 6 FT (extendable to 8FT) Utility trailer?

September 10, 2009 at 11:34 pm #239696Pete, you’re welcome,
Good question…I would think it would fit your trailer since they seem to crate stuff so tightly. It would even be worth the cost just to have all new spare parts for a Fiberfab.
I’ll maintain a watch just in case this one doesn’t work out.
Good luck!

September 12, 2009 at 1:10 am #239697I bought my unfinished kit without donor car and had no problem bringing it into Canada as car parts. Just make sure that the kit was manufactured over 15 years ago and it has all the paperwork.
I used to have a neighbor who figured out how to still import cobra kits — I believe he used several shipments of car parts.
We used a 8 ft enclosed trailer to transport mine and had plenty of room to spare.

Thanks for that information, good to know about the shipping size since I have a Utility Trailer. Found out yesterday that N.S. uses a contracted guy from New Brunswick to handle approvals for homebuilt or kit cars. Will have to contact him via email while I am away. Nobody at Registry of Motor Vehicles here can give me much detail or provide a written guide. Lots of tooth sucking and small head shakes from the N.S. people about how a kit/homebuilt car would be registered, VIN numbers seem to be the big concern. Still, it does get done quite regularly so it is possible. I just want to make sure I don’t invest a lot of time and money and have the last step in the chain tell me I can’t register the car! Also haven’t investigated the Donor VW market much, Beetles have had quite a resurgence in popularity. Have to admit the thought of a 20 year old New build is intriguing. How is your build coming, and what Province are you in?

September 13, 2009 at 12:27 am #239699I finished to car in just less than 3 years –it took lots of time to get the donor car parts the way I wanted them. Had to get a new frame head, new floor pans, sand blasted and painted the whole frame, front disc brakes also moved the e-brake lever to between the seats.
Has been on the road since 2006 registered as a 2006 REPLIKIT MG-TD.
Located on the west coast.
September 13, 2009 at 12:31 pm #239700Hey Phil, when you join the registry (and Pete later) I will need to add another country to the graphic.
I guess I need to get started on that.
