Any thoughts as to where i can buy a new or used car trailer.
January 23, 2012 at 9:21 pm #248816I’d go to craigslist. But, remind me again, why do you want to put a VW-based car on a trailer instead of flat-towing it with a $100 towbar that works just as well and gives you a lighter package?
January 24, 2012 at 8:29 am #248817I’m looking into all ideals for taking my car on long trips, towbar, trailer, car dolly or in the back of my pickup truck.
January 24, 2012 at 9:43 am #248818In the back of your pick-up? That’s a good one.
Check the local papers in your area or if you’re still working, check around work. Might have someone who wants to get a larger trailer and be willing to sell theirs. That’s how I got mine.

However a tow-bar would be the quickest and more reasonably priced. And will store hanging on the garage wall or a corner in the basement.
You could also build your own that would fold up and take up less space than one of them fold up chairs that fit in a bag.Oh wait they have the fold up tow bars.
Tow bar is the ticket. trailer 1500 pounds or more,1600 pound car on the trailer, now 3100 pounds being pulled. Not to mention plates and insurance for a trailer if your state so requires such.Oh and where do you park the trailer when not in use, remember the tow-bar don’t take up much space.
January 24, 2012 at 5:01 pm #248820VW tow bar is the ticket. When I was playing with dub’s I towed them 500 plus miles no problems. You don’t even know the car is behind you.
I’m lookin for a trailer too, but only because mine is Ford powered and a automatic. I passed on one just before Christmas, I prob would have been enough 6×16 single axle only $600 (kickin myself now). Saw another one on craigs list here in Dayton Saturday, 20′ car trailer duel axel (18′ with 2′ dove tail). He’s only askin $700, price is cheap enough but it’s alot more than I need or want. Guess I’m too picky, prob wont find what I want on my beer budget.
January 24, 2012 at 7:55 pm #248821I bought my VW based TD about 500 miles from home. Without thinking I rented a tow dolly to bring her home. Talk about not using my noggin here, the tow dolly rental was more than the cost of a VW tow bar. One of the 1st things I bought for my car was a tow bar and think its the easy way to go on these light VW based cars.
January 24, 2012 at 9:11 pm #248822Yep.
Only time you want to put an air-cooled VW Bug-based car on a trailer is if it has a broken axle or is missing wheels or tires or something. Short of that contingency, the $100 (or less) tow bar, plus a set of lights (if you don’t do what Wobby did and splice a trailer light hookup to your existing tail and running lights) will get you where you need to be. Maybe Saran wrap your windshield, grill and headlights if you want bug protection on a really long haul….
But then again, probably not.
January 26, 2012 at 10:40 am #248823I read somewhere that this towbar will not work if your shocks are inside your springs mine are .Is this so .Maybe one of you could send me a picture.Just trying to be sure. After looking at pictures the area i attach tow bar is square greg press40934.5218865741
January 26, 2012 at 12:55 pm #248824Greg I am assuming you have a VW based. If the front end has been modified to a coil/over susspention set up should not matter.Where the tow bar attaches to the main front beam/tubes will remain the same.
Typically the tow bar attaches inward of the shock towers,so a coil/over should not matter.
I have also seen guys weld a TAB off the bottom of the shock tower and slip a pin through to attach the tow bar, granted 2 ears on the bar.
if all else fails look on he samba site a dub is a dub
January 26, 2012 at 3:22 pm #248825After spending alot of time i found a picture of my front end and everyone says i don’t have your typical front end maybe mine is better and the tow bar won’.t work. You find this by looking up tow bar look up MGLondonroadste a member here .posted june 2011.
January 26, 2012 at 4:16 pm #248826If your front end looks like MGLondonroadster’s the VW tow bar will not fit. You are probably going to have to come up with some custon design.
Perhaps you could use a Roadmaster Falcon tow bar and weld the mounts to the frame. That would allow for a very quick ez on/off without tools. If you are interested in this kind of fix, send me a PM as I have a Roadmaster with mounts left over from my RV days towing a Geo Tracker. I would be willing to bring it up to Carlisle if you wanted it since shipping would be very high.
January 27, 2012 at 7:18 am #248827Greg, Mine has the tabs welded to the front and uses slip pins to attach. We have the same front ends.
