Paul my thought is to make a similar “Tire Step” design, using 1/2″ Steel Tube Electrical Conduit, and stain the wooden slats for the fold down base, to match my dash and steering wheel. I do not like drilling holes in my cars Fiberglass, so my design will hang on the tire, like the Tire Step. I should have a rough design by mid week.

Like you said, I didn’t want to drill any new holes in my car, either(criteria #2). Which is why I went with the style I made. I couldn’t get a “Tire Step” style to match up with any existing holes or get it to have enough clearance over the spare.
Honestly, I couldn’t figure out the mechanics on some of the luggage racks I looked at.I used the K.I.S.S. principle!
I think I’ve succeeded in getting a lot of you thinking how you can make you own racks!

December 16, 2015 at 12:59 pm #265974After some thinking, I wanted to fortify my luggage rack.
So I returned to my DIY home improvement store and purchased some 1″x3″x12′ boards.
Using my VERY limited woodworking experience (I’m into electronics, remember) I came up with this:Added some belts from the big and tall store:
and finished it off with a matching suitcase from my favorite antique store:
I also changed from the pop rivet car attachments to #10×1″ machine screws, lock washers and wing nuts, so I could remove the rack from my car if needed:
Now THAT project is done, it’s time to move on to the NEXT one!

December 16, 2015 at 8:07 pm #265977Really fine job, Stephan. The straps and that vintage case are an especially nice touch.

This style doesn’t obscure rear view mirror site range. Check into Ford Model A luggage rack.. It will take a little adapting but it’s the look I want. I picked up a used one off ebay for $20. Haven’t got it mounted yet, next project though, if I don’t sell the car first.
December 28, 2015 at 10:23 am #265979That’s an interesting option Montie.
I did some searching. This appears to be a Model A style rack, attached to a Baron (a Classic Roadsters Ltd. Mercedes replica, a four seat car which was based on the Classic Roadsters Marlene). Not sure I’d want to do this on my Duchess. But the advantage is it would not interfere with the bottom hinged Duchess engine cover.PMOSSBERG2015-12-28 10:24:40

December 28, 2015 at 10:26 am #265980Or…you could install a goat carrier on your running boards!
I believe this could be re-purposed as a luggage carrier.Safely hold your child on your lap and you will be good to go!PMOSSBERG2015-12-28 10:27:17

December 28, 2015 at 10:29 am #265981Back to being serious…this isn’t $20 like Montie’s. But only $120 brand new.

December 28, 2015 at 1:15 pm #265983Nice price for what it is, looks like. Especially compared to the trunks! Whoa.
Here is the equivalent TD version at $179.edsnova2015-12-28 13:19:27
December 28, 2015 at 2:57 pm #265984The original TD style version will interfere with Classic Roadster Ltd. Duchess’ bottom hinged engine cover. Hence the search for options.PMOSSBERG2015-12-28 14:57:35

December 28, 2015 at 4:06 pm #265985Yes. Most interfere. For our purposes, I still like the “tire step” style best.
December 31, 2015 at 8:38 am #265986The one Paul pictured is like mine, but I’m mounting on top of the bumper under the spare. I don’t have to worry about the rear hatch opening. It should turn out mounted more like what Ed pictured. May end up with a double fold, hinged in the middle. Like everything else on we do on these, completely custom fitted.
December 31, 2015 at 11:34 am #265987I don’t think anyone here would have ANY trouble making the modifications needed to get these to work!(‘cept maybe the goatrack:lol:)
I’ve found this to be QUITE the “think outside the box” group!Amor Conquista Todo

January 2, 2016 at 12:02 pm #265989Ed, this is what I came up with using 1/2″ electrical conduit. It has a hinge, so I can store it up right. I did not want to drill any holes in the fiberglass, so I used the “Tire Step design. I will stain the wood to match my dash and steering wheel.
