Well after doing a full inventory tonight (rained outside) I come up short a couple of items. Here’s the list.
Wiring Harness
One Hood Latch
Wiper Assembly
Inner Door Panels
Fuse Block
Rear View Mirror
Ignition Switch
Steering Column Mount BracketSo I guess the wiper assembly, ignition switch, fuse block and relays are taken from the beetle?
Thanks for any input and if anyone knows where I can get a hood latch for the fiberfab kit please let me know.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 25, 2010 at 8:58 am #242023I think you’re right; wipers, key switch & much electrical are VW items. The steering column mount on Bridget is a straight piece of perforated angle iron–same kind of stuff you mount overhead garage door tracks with, available at Home Despot & etc.
Mirrors are easy, inner door panels you can make. Hood latches are probable pretty easy too. My car actually uses the VW item for that as well, but that’s unusual.
Mossberg will probably chime in with details. He actually knows stuff.
August 25, 2010 at 11:25 am #242024Ok, now you guys are going to have to stop that. I’m not sure I can live up to the pressure.
Wiring Harness – Dune buggy harnesses usually include what you need for a VW based kit car. Sources I have seen in other posts on the harness topic include:
Custom Wiring (http://www.customwiring.com/hotrods.html) says they have a harness for VW MGTD’s. Another forum member also suggested Painless Wiring, Centech and Ron Francis.
One Hood Latch – Depends on what you mean. Some kits use an actual latch, under hood, like you would see on a production car. Most of us tho, have a simple hinged hood, with boat hatch latches to hold it down; usually two of them. This is what I have on my Duchess hood and engine cover:
http://www.marinepartdepot.com/new316ststlo1.html
Wiper Assembly – The VW unit, often flipped upside down.
Inner Door Panels – Have them made. Or maybe MG Magic can help out.
Fuse Block – get it from the same place you buy your harnesses.
Rear View Mirror – I have one of these on my dash, scroll down about a quarter of the way on the page:
http://www.shellvalley.com/Store/products.asp?ID=Accessories &store=cobra
It is not the original TD style. But it has a much greater adjustmetn range. I’m 6’2″. The original style always had me looking at the boot for the roof.
For Fender Mirrors – I have item “D” on this page, with convex lenses on the left and the right:
http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexI D=37025
I think they are avaiable from places like JC Whitney also.
Ignition Switch – I have a 1971 VW steering column in my Duchess. The ignition switch/column lock is integral to the column.
Steering Column Mount Bracket – The Duchess has a cut out in the dash, with additional blocking behind it. The column bolts to that.
Ed’s suggestion is fine. Angle iron and a couple u bolts and you can easily fabricate your own.
I think that about covers it.

August 25, 2010 at 11:27 am #242025I guess I lived up to Ed’s billing. At least this time!

August 25, 2010 at 11:38 am #242026For what it’s worth, item 23 (mirror) and 24 (mirror pad) on thsi page are the original TD style.

But like I said, the adjustment range is very limited. I could not see behind me when it was in the car. And when jsut about everybody on the road is bigger than you, and you are wrapped in a single layer of fiberglass, you want to be able to see around you.
That is also the reason I have convex mirrors on both fenders. Once they are set, you really can see with them.

August 25, 2010 at 1:00 pm #242027Thanks for the info folks.
I appreciate it very much.
Paul, the hood latch that you have matches mine exactly. I’ll have to order one.

"If one thing matters, everything matters" - from the book The ShackAugust 25, 2010 at 2:06 pm #242028As usual, Paul is wealth of unmarketable, but serioulsy valuable knowledge
Most of the latches, hinges, etc. can be had from a good local marine supply house (West Marine).
For VW parts, see http://www.thesamba.com classifieds and join their forum too. Another great source of unmarketable, but serioulsy valuable knowledge They are not as “friendly” as we are though!

August 26, 2010 at 1:40 pm #242030My life too…I almost faint when, while at the NWS Earle Shop working on my ’40 Ford, someone will be working in another bay gets stuck on something and has a question. Then someone says, “ask that old guy over there” and they point at me!

Thanks for the tip on the marine depot for the hood latch. I looked locally and found a local boat dealer and visited their parts store and found two new latch just like the one in the link you gave me. And here’s the best part…price was $8.95 each. And yes, I did buy two. Oooh am I a happy camper.
